Rolling the dice: conversations on risk

Taking Risk is essential, but how much, when and why? Taking risks effectively is as much of an art as it is a science and we’ve asked some of the brightest folks in the community to tell us about how they think about risk taking.

Taking risks is often a necessary step towards achieving success and personal growth. Without risks, there is limited opportunity for change and progress in life. Risks can lead to new experiences, challenges, and ultimately, success. Each risk I have taken has presented me with valuable learning opportunities, pushed me out of my comfort zone, and propelled me towards achieving my goals. One piece of conventional wisdom I disagree with is the idea that stress should be avoided because it will kill you. I don’t believe stress itself is the problem—what’s truly harmful is the belief that stress is inherently bad. Psychologist Kelly McGonigal’s research, especially in her TED Talk and book “The Upside of Stress”, reveals that when we view stress as a helpful response, our bodies react in ways that support resilience and performance.
