We had the good fortune of connecting with Tangela Ashanti and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tangela, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from Memphis, Tennessee. Coming from a low-middle class background that I honestly wasn’t really aware of until I got old enough to know what different classes were is one of the things that influences me, especially now, the most these days; Seeing and experiencing all the different classes and interacting with people from each has made me notice what people from anywhere, no matter how much they have or don’t have, can teach and provide to you and it also made me appreciate what my family provided for me.
What should our readers know about your business?
Graduating in 2021, I went straight to college to major in nursing. Two years later I got into a nursing program and decided to withdraw. I realized that nursing wasn’t what I wanted to do. It made me sad, anxious, depressed, and I realized I was doing it at this point because it was what everyone else wanted me to do, but I wasn’t happy.
I am now currently looking back to enroll with a change of my major into something I’ve been interested in for a while: Real Estate.
I’ve always said I wanted to own and flip houses, and make them affordable for people in the kinds of neighborhoods I’ve seen and grew up in, sort of like Grove Hero, who’s currently building apartments where people can live rent free for a year to have time to accumulate their money.
And since things like Aribnb and Vrbo have been out I’ve been looking into getting places in popular traveling areas for that as well.
I feel like getting into Real Estate is a place I could excel in, as well as help others excel in.
My past jewelry business, Luxury Bands, launched in 2020, has already taught me some important things about business and finance.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If someone were visiting Memphis I would tell them to stay in the Peabody downtown; I’ve never been myself but its definitely on my list of places, its so historical and beautiful!
As far as entertainment I would tell them to make sure they catch the Grizzlies play in action at the FedExForum; They’ve really excelled over the years. I would also recommend going to car show, I love them and the city’s love for their cars is part of the reason I love it.
Last, but definitely not least because I LOVE food, I would recommend ANY wing place here, the city has the best wings; Not only me but many others think so, just ask around!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to bring recognition on my mother, all my aunts, my grandmother, and really most of my female family members. They’ve shown me and continue to show me what it truly means to be a strong African-American women. To be single mothers, wives, business owners, or whatever they set their minds on to be in life, no matter the obstacles, and trust me there are obstacles! So I just want them to know that their work does not go unseen and that they are loved beyond words.
