Where are you from and how has it impacted you?

Even if you are from the same neighborhood as someone else, you might still be coming from different places. Where you are from is a complicated question and it elicits complicated, but interesting and thought-provoking responses. We’ve shared some of those responses below.

I grew up in a single-parent home for most of my childhood, raised by an incredible mother who provided unwavering love and support in every way possible. My biological father passed when I was about five or six, and when my mother remarried during my teenage years, my dad (we don’t do “stepdad” in our family) stepped in and has been a steady presence ever since. I’m from Houston, Tx, and I pretty much grew up around music. My grandparents are pastors of a local church in the city. A lot of my musical upbringing started with me singing with the adult choir at a young age at my grandparents church. I also grew up watching my cousins, who are also artists, and that too motivated me to follow my musical journey. Most importantly my dad.
