We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Gonzalez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I’m gonna be honest, im the worst at taking risks. I’m a socially awkward person who is always afraid of getting out of my comfort zone but since about two years ago, i decided ‘what the heck’ and started posting on my socials about makeup products i would buy and try out and if i liked them or not. A lot of times it was just friends listening to me, i always posted of my instagram stories only because i only had about 80 followers at the time and didn’t feel as embarrassed with people i knew. Then one day i started posting on my feed, selfies, outfit inspo, make up looks and started to get more and more people looking at my feed on instagram. From then i switched over to a business account and was able to create videos like igtv and etc. Ive been slowly going up in views and likes and have even gotten sponsored by two brands. I’m not where i want to be and i have a lot of more work to do. I’m now on YouTube, Tik tok, instagram and also go live on facebook. I’m not as consistent as i want but i also am i normal person with kids and a house to maintain so it isn’t as easy to me as it may be to others but if i hadn’t taken the risk of posting more and more of what i like to do i wouldn’t of been able to be here doing what i love and typing out this interview. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to share a little bit about myself. Remember that if you want to do something or be something you have to take risks, who cares what people think. Live your life how you want to.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art, will always and forever be makeup. Any time i am creating an eyeshadow look i am creating art. All the colors, the blending, the time i invest into it is my art. I don’t focus just on beauty but it is where i began and what i love to do. I wouldn’t say that there isn’t any other like me because there is, there’s so many others doing what im doing. I think what keeps me interesting is im pretty normal and just me online and in person. I try really hard to stay true to who i am. There’s many lessons I’ve learned, especially learning that the more support you receive the more hate as well. It scares me but that wont stop me either. As far as what i want for the world to know about me is, that no matter what you think of me, how you want to perceive me, or if you think what i do isn’t important, know that i don’t care; because i am not doing this for anyone other than for my passion. If you want to listen, go ahead. If you want to support, thank you but hating me wont stop me. My story is simple, i started my journey doing makeup to get away from my world, it was a distraction that helped me overcome all the abuse i was enduring on a daily basis, it helped me learn to love myself again. So no, i wont stop doing this.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Wow, okay first off im from a very small town called RIO GRANDE CITY, was born and raised there. It’s so small there’s really nothing to do. We all usually traveled to near by city called MCALLEN TX, its way bigger and more things to do. I am currently living in another small town but McAllen is around the corner. First thing we would do is go to SPI, south padre island. I mean its not my favorite stop even when i live close to it but its the only beach we have near by and by mystery a lot of people travel here for it. We’d go and rent a 4 wheeler and just cruise the beach , eat at claytons to eat and drink. Once we’re done doing that i would take you to our very favorite hot spot for bars, its called 17th st and its a street lined up with bars and clubs, people tend to bar hop a lot there. We can’t skip going to the mall that near us. It isn’t big but we don’t have much else. Honestly there isn’t anywhere else, i know pretty boring huh? Yeah that’s life here in the valley. We can definitely go down to progresso Mexico for some tacos, mexican music and drinks. They’re lochesitos are the most delicious things you’ll ever taste. The valley is also very popular for tacos. We have many places to choose from.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The only ones i will ever thank and give a shoutout to would be my kids and my kids only. They are what keeps me going and i want them to see that if you put your mind to it and your heart you can do what you love. They are my biggest motivation.
