We had the good fortune of connecting with Vicky Cortez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vicky, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
I feel that many, almost all, clients receiving nail salon services are unaware of just how unsanitary MOST corner nail salons are. It’s not uncommon for shops to employ unlicensed Nail Technicians, nor is it uncommon for clients to leave these establishments with a fungus, hand/foot infection, etc. Nearly half of local salons use illegal product called MMA for Acrylic enhancements.

I advise everyone to do your research on your local nail salons. Do not be afraid to ask questions. Legally, every salon should be able to provide you with proof of legal product (EMA), and proof of every single pedicure chair cleaning. Ask for new or sterilized implements for every service. The health of your hands and feet may depend on it!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I feel that I perform well in my industry due to my ability to create such a wide range of art for my clients. I enjoy mastering every form of nail art that I can, in order to ensure my client is as happy as possible with the final outcome!

My nail journey has not been a short or easy one, however 6 years later I’m now a successful Nail Salon owner and I couldn’t be more proud. Overcoming the many obstacles along the way hasn’t been easy. I’m constantly reminding myself of why I started; This keeps me on track and gives me the fuel that I need to strive for my goals even harder than before!

I’ve learned a great deal of lessons along the way. My greatest lesson thus far has been learning to put myself and my business out there. The key to success in this industry is a great attitude and exposure. I’m constantly interacting with others, meeting new people and making a memorable impression on everyone I meet. I’ve learned that hiding in anxiety gets you nowhere. You’ve got to learn to step outside of that comfort zone and own it.

I’d like others to know that success has no age limit. Anyone is capable of creating a brand and excelling in that brand. Dreams are meant to be chased. If someone is going to succeed, why can’t it be you?

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of my favorite spots in the city would have to be the Houston Museum of Natural Science and any movie theater that is closest! I enjoy laid back nights out with quiet dinners and minimal chaos!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I regularly listen in on Young Nails ‘Biztalk’ podcasts. Although I feel that I have a good grip on how to run my business and interact with clientele, it’s always great to freshen up those skills and learn a couple things to improve on. You’re never done learning!
