We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Harrell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always been entrepreneurial! In college, I owned a children’s entertainment business which helped with my tuition. And in 2021, I self-published a children’s book. I enjoy being creative and thinking strategically. I’ve always been fascinated with photography, so I took some classes, got some equipment, and picked up freelance photography for a few years before I decided to turn it into a business. I love being able to capture milestone and personalities from behind the camera.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started Lauren Harrell Photography, LLC as an affordable photography service in the Houston area. I take pictures of almost everything – headshots, engagements, and families. I think anyone can take a picture, but it takes someone who can take the picture in a fun and engaging way to really make the picture (and model!) come to life. Editing is also very important. A good photographer can capture the pictures well, and edit in a way that enhances certain features but doesn’t overdo it. That’s where I believe I have both photography and editing as my strengths. In my business, I make it all about the experience. When I take pictures for a client, I want him or her to laugh, have fun, and let his or her personality show.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
That’s a great question, and there’s a lot we could fit in a week! My favorite spot in Houston is the Theatre District. We would go to a show (or two!) at the Alley Theatre, Wortham Theater, or Hobby Center, take a class at the Houston Ballet, tour the Downtown Aquarium, and spend an afternoon at Discovery Green for outdoor yoga (and maybe a photoshoot!) Of course, we wouldn’t forget the Museum of Fine Arts and an Astros game at Minute Maid Park! We’d visit the Red Lion British Pub for fish and chips, Little Woodrow’s for drinks, or if we’re feeling fancy, we’d drive over to Taste of Texas in Memorial District for an expensive treat! If we are craving some coffee and fun, we’d hang out at Tea + Victory for board games and beverages. That place is definitely one of my favorites.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to send a shout out to my family. My parents have always been supportive of me, no matter how crazy busy I am. They’ve always there for me and I am grateful to have their words of wisdom, love, and encouragement by my side. I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for them, so thank you, Mom and Dad!
