We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Marcotte and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I ultimately wanted more control over the work I produce. I spent 5 years in oil and gas as an analyst, and I felt after Covid that I wanted to join the family business and drive my own destiny.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Boardwalk Pools is a purely family owned and operated business. My grandfather owned a pool business in California, and my father has been in it his whole life. My brother and I grew up cleaning the local pool, and assisting my dad with repairs on the weekends. We truly care about our customers and have a passion for the industry. Being an Aggie, I try to enhance that with the values I learned in college.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston is a fantastic city, filled with plenty to do. I believe it’s greatest strength is the food, which is a direct result of immense diversity of the city. One of my favorite taco spots is Tacos Del Julio, a must have! Pho & More has the best banh mi, and Ashay’s Pizza makes the best Indian style pizzas in town. Of course, the local breweries are always a hit. Karbach, St. Arnolds, and No Label in Katy are some of my favorites. Also, Improv always has great comedians performing, memorial park for outdoor activities, and Galveston isn’t a far drive!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There’s many people I can attribute to helping guide me through life, but the most impactful would be my father. From his work ethic to his faith, he leads with compassion, which I try to emulate in all facets of life.
