We had the good fortune of connecting with Avalin Reedy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Avalin, what role has risk played in your life or career?
You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. This pretty much sums up risks for me. I’m always ready to open my mind to new adventures, which is why risks don’t scare me. I believe that I took the biggest risk ever by deciding to compete in Miss Black USA’s Talented Teen!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I am a high school junior. When I graduate high school, it is my goal to major in social work! What sets me apart from other contestants is this is my first pageant. It has not been a smooth road, but I’m getting the hang of practicing, interviewing, and getting active in my community. Since school is about to be out, I plan to hit it hard with my coach to practice!

Outside of the pageant, I currently am on the Royal Silks color guard team at my high school. I have so much fun performing with my friends at big events. I also performed this year at the Houston Rodeo Parade!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

I would take my friend downtown to see the beautiful skyline we have here in Houston, then I would take my friend to an exciting program at Landmark Community Center in Missouri City, where I attend lots of events. Then I would take them to a rooftop movie in Uptown.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a huge shoutout to the Miss Black USA pageant organization for giving young black women like me an opportunity to represent our state with our talent and community service! I also want to thank my mom, siblings, and pageant coach, Mariah, for helping me along this exciting journey!
