We had the good fortune of connecting with Dan Caldwell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought behind me starting my own business was I wanted to help people in a more personal way than I could achieve working for others in this profession. I had a vision of what that might look like and decided it was time to do so. I am grateful I did! I am at a place where I am able to make an impact in some people’s lives no matter how big or small that may be. I am honored to be in a position to be able to do so in any capacity. I have made a career that spans from therapy and intervention, to evaluations and teaching. I am able to maintain complete autonomy in doing the work I do and am solely responsible for it being a success or a failure.

What should our readers know about your business?
I have built a career in the business of helping. By the very nature of this, it is not easy at times as the business side and the helping side sometimes collide. I have developed a business model that works for me and the people I work with. I have a therapy practice where I am a solo practitioner. While I specialize in working with individuals and their families with substance use disorders, I see a range of different people with varying concerns. I offer a safe space to process their life vents and collaborate with them in search for a solution. I perform substance use interventions all over the United States. I love this work as well. In an intervention setting my work is primarily with the family. I do evaluations work for the Department of Transportation as a qualified SAP (Substance Abuse Professional). Over the past three years I have taught course work at Lone Star College and The University of ST. Thomas in their Drug and Alcohol Counseling programs. As a person with almost 14 years of sobriety myself, this work is important work to me. Whether I am working directly with a client or hoping to change the world through other people by teaching, I love it all the same and value the opportunities to do what I do. When it is a life purpose, you can overcome the challenges of becoming a business owner and having multiple licenses. The best part of what I do, is I have created a schedule that allows me to help others outside of a paying career. I am a weekly volunteer at Houston Pets Alive. It is an animal shelter that I get to show up every Thursday and walk and care for dogs. I am blessed to be in a position on Fridays to mentor a fifth-grade young person for the local school district. Any challenges my career present are worth working through as I am able to not only help in a paying career but in a volunteer capacity as well.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston is a wonderful place! You are close to a beach and several other major cities such as Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio. Houston is wonderfully diverse with a restaurant scene that shows its diversity well. There is a museum district and a medical center that are second to none. There are many professional sports teams her in H-Town. However, I would drive you to Dallas for a Cowboys game. Houston is an enormous city that can have a small-town feel. In particular in the industry of addiction and recovery that I work in. You can drive an hour or two in any direction and be in a completely different environment. While I am always happy to visit other place, I am also always glad to return to Houston.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many that deserve credit for my success. I have worked and to build relationships my entire career. I would have to say Bonnie Steele from (what was the) Memorial Hermann PaRC. She was a manager I had for many years. She helped guide and shape the clinician that I am today. Another professional from the same place was a man named Dr. Vaughn Bryant. He helped teach me how to be a professional. Professor Steve Lewis and Glen Killian from Lone Star College were such big supporters in the early going. There are countless professionals that I am proud to work side by side with in helping individuals reach and maintain recovery.
