We had the good fortune of connecting with Kellye Skaer, IBCLC and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kellye, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Connection.
Postpartum can be such a joyful and challenging space for parents. So many shifting dynamics are at play under one roof that few really prepare parents for. With a new baby, our hormones and bodies change, our relationships shift, our identity expands, we have physical pain & restrictions that can be hard to navigate, so much sleep deprivation, and goodness, so many worries about the little tiny person we are now in charge of. When parents land on my couch, they are bearing ALL of that along with a broad spectrum of feeding challenges. It is a tender transition in life. I know that when I can connect with families- see them, hear them, validate their concerns, celebrate their victories, and come up with a care plan that is achievalbe specifically for them, that becomes a really beautiful way for me to measure the success of MIlk&Mom.
What should our readers know about your business?
I have worked really hard over the last 10 years to establish trusted relationships with providers, I’m really proud of that. Through every patient, I have grown to value a collaborative approach when it comes to healthcare. I respect my colleagues immensley and value the depth of wisdom they bring to each family. I love when we brainstorm the very best plan of care for a patient. I love learning and educating each other. My scope is specific and unique, as both mother and baby are my patients. I often spend hours, weeks, months with a family depending on their needs. More often than not, I’m the only person watching a mother & baby feed (brestfeeding & bottle feeding!) so I really appreciate that we are in a community that recognizes and values the perspective that an IBCLC brings to the table. That relational trust between providers does not come quickly or easily. It is build one patient at a time. I’m extremely proud of the reputation and high standard of care I have built through Milk&Mom.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A day with my bestie would definetly start at Pure Barre Creekside for a great workout! We would walk to Fieldings Local after for a long lazy brunch that would have to include the amazing Lemon Cream Cheese Pancakes and a LOT of coffee!! I would take the drive to Tara Austin’s shop Ruthie Grace in Montgomery for some great botique finds. We would pick up an afteroon green juice on the way back at Clean Juice in Sterling Ridge before driving on over to Arbor Gate to satisfy our flower obsession! We are both book lovers so a few hours reading poolside will always be a part of our time together. And because I would prefer to walk everywhere, we’d probably end up back at Fieldings Local for a great cocktail and steak carved tableside because theirs is perfection! We have 9 kids between us so that might be as wild as we get, ha!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I spent the first 7 years of my career side by side with Dr Kim Feuquay @ The Woodlands Tongue Tie Center. She is a brilliant Pediatric Dentist who really invested in me as a friend, mentor, and colleague. We served throusands of families together navigating the complexities of Restrictive Tethered Oral Tissues (Tongue Ties!). Her mentorship and wisdom became invaluable in my career as a Lactation Consultant and I am gratful for our continued partnership in helping families thrive!
