We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicky Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicky, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind Kloset Hive was to cater to women where I can be a go-to for not only fast fashion but for fashion that makes them look as good as they feel good. Also to be known for women who like to be in between sexy, classy, and casual. It’s like the perfect combination to have. Women gotta have options. That’s what KH is known for; rather they want to apply some pressure, be a lil sassy or cute, and on the go.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Let’s see, Kloset Hive boutique is known for catering to a woman’s mood. We are the go-to for whatever mood she’s in. Rather it is feeling like showing a lil something to highlight her best features, going on a date, applying some pressure when she walks into a room, showing her classy side, fun side, wifey side, or just want to be cute and simple. We have every woman covered, and for that, I’m proud. Currently, I’m excited about the extension of my little girl’s line. We cater from sizes 2-10. My baby girl is the face of that line which is called Kloset Hive Honeybuns. It’s a spin-off name from the adult line, and so is the tagline “Where the little Honey’s shop” So far it’s doing relatively well. I’m very eager to see where it is 6 months from now! The road to being a boutique owner is so challenging, but I wouldn’t take it for granted. I still work a full-time admin job Mon-Fri. It’s very challenging with time to get orders processed out, posting, and growing my brand. But I’m making it! To be very honest, Kloset Hive has been open now for 2 years and within year one (not even a full year) I got so discouraged and felt defeated. I didn’t even give it a chance to bloom! With the added push I came back ready for it all. You never stop learning or growing. I have learned from my challenges. I pinpoint the mistakes I made that lead to that challenge or a failed process. And that’s the key. If you can’t learn or figure out what happened, you can never grow. Another challenge I’ve faced is expecting me from other people, rather it is them having the same work ethics as me or being as passionate about my brand just as much as I am. I can’t expect myself and my passion from others. Some will have it and some can. I appreciate those that do. Most times as an entrepreneur, you are a person of many hats. Respectfully and humbly I say that I am behind the scenes, in front of the scenes, the shipper, the packager, the marketer, the accountant, my hype squad, my coach, my model, my photographer, and much more! Lessons I’ve learned are to stop impulse buying and to focus on my current repeat customers. They are the priority. All new customers will come in the process. You must plan, set goals, and have a clear vision. If you’re just doing anything off impulse and have no goals, then that’s when mistakes happen and you’ll fall for anything. What I want the world to know about me is that the woman behind this boutique has faced a lot of obstacles, criticism, and ridicule in her lifetime, but it has NEVER stopped me from getting what I want in life. I’m not perfect, but I try to make the best out of everything I face. I look for the positive in the negatives and thrive off that. I have obtained a Business Admin degree in 2018 all the while working a full-time job and raising 3 little ones. No one made it easy, I was determined. Just as I’m determined for KH to be successful. Lastly, I want a storefront, and one day, on God’s timing because his timing is perfect, everything will line up, and I will have the storefront! I won’t ever let anything detour me or feel defeated and I look forward to meeting so many beautiful queens and catering to yawl fashion needs.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oooh, to be honest, I’m such a laid-back person. LOL. (kinda boring) but if it came down to it, I’d show her Turkey Leg Hut because it’s entertaining, food is great and great atmosphere if you like to be seen like that because they always record their customers. I’d also take her to the Katy area, they have a great shopping mall there then check out the water park. It’s summertime and it’s super hot in Texas right now. Don’t anybody have time to be sweating off makeup, honey! For something thrilling we can go to Galveston’s Pleasure Pier. They have rides along the shore. Or Moody Gardens. Maybe some Hibachi food because I love that style of food and if she’s in the mood for BBQ, we’d hit up Papa’s BBQ or an old fav of mine in Pearland, Central Texas Style BBQ. I’m always down for a great movie or a good ol’ eats! I love to eat!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I first and foremost give all respect and credit to my creator, God. Without him, I’m nothing. Without the vision he gave me, Kloset Hive wouldn’t even exist. Secondly, I shout out to my loved ones and close friends who have supported me since day one. They know who they are. I’m very thankful for all the pushes, encouragement, and pep talks I’ve gotten. To my models that I’ve used over time, thank you for your participation and dedication. Last, but certainly not least, my Honey’s. These are the faithful shoppers who support my business and are essentially the glue to my business.
