We had the good fortune of connecting with Monica Dambach and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monica, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
There are a lot of misconceptions about what it’s like to be a Realtor. While I wouldn’t trade it for anything, as a Realtor you’re an entrepreneur and it takes an incredible amount of time to build your business and once it’s built then you’ll likely end up working 24/7 as you’re essentially in the customer service industry. It may seem like this is an easy gig, but not if you’re actually successful and do right by your clients.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own and operate, along with 6 other partners, a boutique real estate agency called Waypoint Brokers Collective with an office in the heart of Portland, Maine. The path as a Realtor to partner hasn’t always been easy. When the pandemic hit, our industry went wild. I was working 24/7 to fulfill the needs of my clients. My work life balance was non-existent. I had to miss the tail end of my daughters first birthday party to do a showing. I’ve spent countless nights and weekends listing homes. My family supports me every step of the way, but my point is that there have been extreme sacrifices to get to where I am now. I learned the hard way that you cannot be everything to everyone after having an emotional and physical breakdown at the end of 2020. I looked back on my biz and how much it had grown that year and I said I’d never work that much again. It was all I did morning, day and night. Setting boundaries have been the only way I’ve learned to create any sort of normalcy when juggling real estate and family work life balance. I am extremely transparent whenever I take on a new client about what hours I work, what type of work I’ll do for them, the strategies we can use, and how creative I can get to achieve their goals so we are all on the same page. It took me until 33 years old to realize that there’s more to life than working 24/7, and when you become your most authentic self and share your story with your clients that they respect you more. This is really when I saw my career in real estate soar – the clients I worked with had a much deeper understanding of who I was and what value I could bring to them. I want the world to know that being different than others and sharing your unique value proposition is everything – define who you are, who you want to be and share that with whoever you decide to work with. Only at that point will the law of attraction happen and you’ll see your business soar!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live and work in Greater Portland. Maine offers a slow paced lifestyle that allows you to be within the heart of the city in less than 15 minutes with limited traffic, explore a plethora of beaches along the coast or head to the mountains within 2 hours drive. During the week you can find me walking one of three beaches in Scarborough, exploring a new restaurant for lunch in Portland, or biking to a showing. At night then there’s a good chance we are out at one of the islands within Casco Bay for dinner. Come the fall, checking out a new land trust trail or exploring a new mountain is where our heart lies. And for the winter we are most likely skiing, snowshoeing or walking with our dogs to catch the fresh snow. We embrace all seasons in Maine – all you need to do is dress for it!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My clients, sphere and colleagues have fueled my success. I wouldn’t be here without them! My sphere continues to shout my name from the rooftops whenever a friend asks them who should help sell their home. I am forever grateful at the amazing humans I get to work with on what can be a very emotional and one of the largest financially driven decisions they’ll ever make.
