We had the good fortune of connecting with CasinoATX and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi CasinoATX, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
As far as being in the entertainment field, to me success is two things. First and foremost getting to the point where your music, art, media content, or whatever you create pays your monthly bills. Not many people in the entertainment field can say this, and if you reach this point, you have really achieved something only most can dream of. Second would be just making gains over the years. To me that defines success in the entertainment business.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Unlike a lot of rappers out today, I really feel I paid my dues in the trenches of the music business. I was a hype man first. Doing backup for someone else. Then I was in multiple groups. Eventually I started my own company, and became the head of the group, and handled most of the business. This helped me avoid a lot of traps that many artists find themselves in, and I was able to keep ownership of pretty much all of my music over the years. I was able to teach this to a lot of the people I worked with, and just people I met along the way, so I kind of became a source of information for others. Hence one of my nicknames The Mayor. I guess you could say I’m the rappers rapper, as most of my fans are actually other people that do music. I tell a lot of stories about my life, my music pursuits, and I pride myself on giving a good mix of solid bars, catchy hooks, and either fun or reality based music.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As far as Austin goes, there’s a lot to do. Me being a Street Nerd it would be a mix-up of some Nerd stuff and hood stuff. So as far as good food we’d have to hit SLAB, which is a local BBQ spot here. Great BBQ sandwiches, and their all named after rappers. I’d recommend the Notorious PIG! Other food spots to hit would be Ramen Tatsuya, Halal Bros, and then end it with some Purple Margaritas from Baby A’s!! Spots to have fun would be a stop at Dragons Lair Comics to geek out a bit. Down Town 6th St or the Rainey St area for some bar hopping. Games and Go-Kart driving at Pinball. Then end it with some drinks (and more food) at Tater Que!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Besides my immediate family and friends, someone who truly inspired me was Devin The Dude. I had the honor to open up a show for him, and the chance to hang out with him backstage. He was the first major artist to give me the perspective of just making your art pay your basic bills first, and that being the first measure of success for yourself. Like a lot of young artists in the game, I was talking about having lavish things, and reaching top charts. He told me then, those things are great, but to keep my focus on making music a long term career, and not just a here today, gone tomorrow type situation. That’s always stayed with me, and helped me shape the mind frame I have about business and music. I may not be the most known or popular TX artists, but I’ve been able to create multiple revenue streams for myself all around my music career. I owe this to being educated early on, by Devin the Dude.
