Meet Kerry thekyleblue” Smith | Comic Book Author and Writer”

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kerry “thekyleblue” Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kerry “thekyleblue”, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have a love for comic books and thought why not make one myself. I wanted to have a space to create content that is worthy of reading and to self publish. I want to create stories worth publishing and inspiring. My goal is to create stories illustrated in Black and White with Black characters in Texas.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Born and raised in Houston, Tx and performs locally as Storyteller, Poet, and Comedian. Now venturing into publishing my own comic book through Tha Blue Hyena Publishing. My first comic book to be called Langley inspired by personal tragedy. Here I create a fictional supernatural story inspired by my life but approaching with a lighter tone. I have really learned to be an example and reach out to others through creative writing. I personally love the challenge of creating a comic book and love the collaboration process with the Illustrator. I’ve learned that no matter what happens in life to move forward as gracefully as possible. I want to continue to be an example to my family and surround myself with good friends. I want everyone to know that I love to be creative and engaging with material I put forth and publish. I want others to recognize my skill for storytelling and to gain something from the stories I tell. I want to create teachable moments.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well Starbucks never gets old in my opinion lol. I love the creative performing arts community in Houston area and would love to take anyone to fun shows around town such as comedy or poetry.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am a Comic Book Author and Creative that is launching very first Comic Book called Langley. Story about a teenager that tragically passes away and helps his father from the afterlife. They have a journey bound together and would be great for a reader to engage with.

About this book, well it was inspired by one of the last selfie photos taken with my son and a goat from an Texas outdoor safari trip in 2021. 2022 my son passed and I reflect on that photo of such a great day of joy shared with him and the animals there. I created a fictional story of a son helping his father after death and wanted to create a relatable experience for the casual reader. My intention is to say that if I could rewrite his story to some extent then this is how it would look. Langley name given by name of street I grew up on and fitting for this character. I want anyone reading this to understand that in death and ongoing life remains a sense of purpose to be discovered. The journey never ends and lessons to be learned.

Who am I? I am born and raised in Houston, Texas and known locally as storyteller, poet, and comedian with relatable sense of humor. Now I am a comic book author. Sounds cool doesn’t it? Ha!
