We had the good fortune of connecting with Rodric Horton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rodric, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
As a kid I had a huge interests in music and at the time, my mother’s CDs and records, which consisted of mo-town funk, soul, and 90s hip-hop had a very unique sound that I would try to copy by humming and (unintentionally at the time) beatboxing. That curiosity of sounds grew as I grew and while I was going through alot of mental hardships during the teen years, my brother MJ introduced me to a FL studio platform where I could make music. I felt a sense of freedom when making beats and wanted to chase that feeling over and over again and I wanted to extend that feeling to others. Eventually that became my main reason for being a beatmaker and producer.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My brother and I have formed a brand known as Kemetic Rhythms which brings genres of tribal, jazz, and hip-hop together in a rugged freeform style. Very grassroots sound that has an air of spirituality. I’m very proud of the synergy our group has when it comes to playing together. Everything feels natural even in the midst of jamming and I feel like thats the cornerstone of what we want our brand to represent.
I honestly don’t consider myself as a professional at this moment in time, but rather as a student of the musical arts. There are a lot of things we’re undertaking for the first time in terms of branding, marketing, and navigating the music business, but my main advice is to make sure you have a team of like minded people who can support each other and be real with critical feedback. That’s how artists grow and see substantial progress.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Sig’s Lagoon is a MUST see!! This is absolutely my favorite record shop in all of H-Town. Cool Heads Prevail is another amazing record spot on the outskirts of downtown that also host beatmaker meetups, DJ events and has dope off the wall records to explore. Midtown has lots of spots to eat but I very much prefer the small mom and pop places like Staccatos, which is owned by a small Pakistani family. Amazing burgers, pizza, and pakistani specialties. I also dig ramen and japanese foods so we’d be hitting up GIN, Gyu-Kaku, and Miyuzaki ramen shops too. Not too much of a drinker, but the Beer Barn on Richmond is pretty dope. It’s literally a huge red barn house with a drive-thru and you order your favorite beers.
I’m a bit of a recluse when it comes to social gatherings but I would highly recommend following the beat scene’s meetup spots at places like Trash Panda, Cool Heads Prevail, and Axelrad. Amazing spots for just chilling and seeing local artists perform.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First off shoutouts to my mom for putting up with all the loud noise I was making while navigating music haha. Shoutout to my brother MJ, for showing me a path I never knew I could walk through with this art. My late sister, Keysha for always having the utmost live and support for what we made and influenced my brother and I to further pursue our passions. And my other half, Alisha for putting up with my stuborness when it came to working non stop at times. She really helped me come back to earth and realign myself with balancing life and music.
