We had the good fortune of connecting with William Hoston and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi William, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting Hoston Enterprises, LLC was the first step in creating an independent consultant business. The first thing I had to do was identify my niche audience to target. It was important to use my educational background to frame the business and cater to those who had similar interest and life goals.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
While my title reads, “professor of political science,’ I am a teacher. I teach because it is my firm belief that the ultimate gratification is making a difference in students’ lives. The goals I have as a teacher are threefold: (1) I want to inspire my students to become better social scientists, (2) to become life-long students, and (3) ultimately become better people. These aspirations are central to why I teach.
First, in order to help students in my discipline become better social scientists, I attempt to present the class materials in a challenging yet exciting manner that will draw the students in and engage them intellectually.
Second, there are many college students who do not understand the importance of residual knowledge. I attempt to teach my students how to make learning a life-long pursuit.
Finally, I aim to teach my students to become better people. I feel educators have a responsibility to teach their students how to not only be productive in their field, but also in their roles as fellow citizens and community members. To achieve this lofty goal, I deal with my students as intelligent and responsible adults and expect them to live up to that treatment.
As I venture outside of academia into the consultant world, the same principles apply. In the words of George Bernard Shaw, “I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the community, and as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can.” These are the reasons I teach.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My late grandmother, Mildred Hoston, was a former educator and dedicated woman of Christ. She told me more positive things than anyone in my life. My grandmother was always upbeat and reassuring. Her favorite saying to me was, “Boy, when you grow up you gonna be somebody.” She encouraged me to read the Bible and find inspirational materials that feed my soul. One of her favorite inspirational readings was “Our Deepest Fears” by author, Marianne Williamson.
