We had the good fortune of connecting with Sandy Wahowski and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sandy, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind the success of Bo Biscuits Dog Treats are the Dogs! When I think back to the series of events in my life and my loved one’s lives, there is always a four legged friend in the story. My grandfather’s legacy involved the love of his dogs. My memories of my grandfather always involved how much he cherished the friendship of his dogs and years later when his recipe showed up in my mailbox, I knew that our purpose was to always keep our dogs at the center of our business.

Sharing stories with other pet parents about how their dogs have helped them through the toughest times of their lives with loyalty and love, how our own dogs’ paths have crossed ours, and the joy these animals bring to our days makes our purpose profound. These wonderful pets deserve the best of the best and that is our goal at Bo Biscuits Dog Treats.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Bo Biscuits Dog Treats started as a package in the mail from my Aunt Katie in Florida during the summer of 2021. I had just adopted Bo, this adorable 8 week old Border Collie puppy from Special Pals Animal Shelter. The package included a hand written recipe, a note, and a set of dog bone cookie cutters. The note enclosed stated that the recipe was my grandfather’s creation, John Riley. My late grandfather became a baker after retiring from the US Navy.

My boyfriend and I started baking dog treats for Bo and other pups in our lives. We got great feedback from our friends and family about how much their dogs LOVED the treats.

As a full time high school teacher, finding other ways to make extra money is a must in today’s economy. In December of 2022, my boyfriend, Larry and I were selling our artwork at the Katy Market Day local market. We put the dog treats out on our table to see if people with pets would like to sample our treats. Within an hour, ALL of the treats were gone and many pup tails were wagging in delight!

We spent the next year developing our brand, perfecting the recipes, and saving two more dogs. Bo Biscuits Dog Treats officially launched in December 2023 at the Katy Market Day Old Fashion Christmas Market.

Since our launch, we have met so many cool dogs and their owners; we have opened a store in Painted Tree Sugar Land, traveled all over Houston participating in markets; partnered with Dogtopia Katy, and creating collaboration with other dog centered small businesses including Woof and Wicks Candle Co. based out of Virginia.

All of our dogs are rescued from either a shelter or the streets. We know there are SO many more out there that need comfort, love and a place to feel safe. Our mission at Bo Biscuits Dog Treats is to create a sanctuary for those dogs that have been in shelters for a long period of time or living as strays on the streets. This sanctuary will provide a place where dogs can be themselves and feel loved while waiting for a forever home.

Our brand is centered on dogs. We want to help as many as possible and bring awareness to protecting, caring, and adopting from shelters. We love making tails wag and giving a healthy alternative to treats for pet parents.

I hope that my grandfather’s love for his dogs will carry on through Bo Biscuits Dog Treats and I feel honored to be in the position to make that legacy come alive.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would suggest for any visitor to Houston to see the various breweries around. We frequent H-Town Brewing Co and Saint Arnolds near downtown. Both breweries have relaxing spaces that are pet friendly where you can bring your furry friend along.

I would also suggest Eureka Heights Brewery and Holler Brewing Co in the Houston Heights area. They have the best selection of beers, and again pet friendly and family friendly. Both breweries have hosted many events including the Houston Plant Market and Plant Swap.

If you are in the Katy area, No Label Brewery is our home turf. A family friendly spot in historic downtown Katy will allow all members of the family to relax, enjoy small-ish town vibes, and fresh brews. Not far from No Label Brewery is Mary Jo Peckham Park in downtown Katy. This park has the BEST dog park in Katy with large fenced in areas for dogs to run, practice agility, swim, and enjoy just being a dog.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A huge shoutout goes to my daughter, Harper Szafran and boyfriend, Larry Martinez. I owe many thanks to these two beautiful souls for believing in me and our mission to help and cater to all of the dogs.

My daughter, Harper has shown so much compassion for animals, learning about how to take risks and support other local businesses. She is nine years old and already has big plans for our mission in the future. I love her kind and loving spirit. I am so blessed to be her mother.

My boyfriend, Larry is my rock. He has helped invest time, money, muscle, and support in so many ways. He motivates me to keep going, reminders to stay humble, and stay our course. He spends his weekends helping me with markets, deliveries, baking and packaging. I am so blessed to have such a wonderful person in my life that believes so much in me and Bo Biscuits Dog Treats.
