We had the good fortune of connecting with Omega Benson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Omega, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My youngest daughter was born with a rare congenital heart defect and I was unable to go back to work for a while after she was born due to her needing around the clock care. I found myself taking pictures of her and her sisters with my cell phone, just capturing different moments for keepsakes because we didn’t know what the future held for my baby. Thankfully she made it through and she is still with us. In 2017 I decided to purchase my first camera and began self teaching myself photography. I met an amazing photographer while living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana by the name of Angelica, who is the owner of Childish Couture Photography who became my mentor. She helped me strengthen my photography skillset, I am very grateful for her to this day and I miss her a great deal since I’ve moved back to Houston.
Photography has allowed me to capture milestones and help individuals and families create memories that will last for a lifetime. When my clients see their galleries, their reactions are priceless and that makes it all worthwhile for me. I love to see the smiles and tears of joy.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Omega’s Vivid Images is still growing and a work in progress. My photography is local right now, but my vision is big. I have a goal to work with global names and become a household name. My photography is unique to me for it’s VIVID and bold colors, unique concepts that I try to incorporate into my sessions. While I am a one woman business, I am happy and proud to show two of my three daughters the ins and outs of photography. From tagging along with me to photoshoots, as well as being in front of my camera lens, my girls have gained an interest in what I do, and it makes me proud. Who knows, maybe one day I will be able to pass Omega’s Vivid Images on to them, and keep the tradition going. I am exited about teaching them everything I know, and having them work along side me.
Where I am today professionally did not come easy, it came with a lot of tears, disappointments and setbacks. There have been times that I wanted to give up on photography and just stick with my regular job due to feeling my work wasn’t good enough, or I was just being my own worst critic.
There are lessons in being a business owner that I learn on a daily basis, and the main lesson is to TRUST GOD. God gave me this gift, and there is no way He will let me fail.
If there is something I would want the world to know about Omega, my brand and my story, it would have to be is that God is amazing. I was born 2 months early as a preemie. The doctors told my parents, that I would not survive, I endured numerous surgeries as a baby, and a toddler. I have several scars from those operations. Those same doctors told my mother that if I did survive I would not be able to have children and I would be unable to care for myself. Well, the God I serve is AMAZING! I am the proud mother of 4 HEALTHY, AMAZING children ages 26, 21, 13, and 11. I am the owner of TWO businesses, I work a full time job, I am the daughter of two amazing parents, and the youngest of an older talented sibling who’s known as Erikah Nocturnal. No one can tell me what GOD can’t do!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston, TX is the fourth most populated city in the United States and the most diverse. There is so much to do here, from entertainment, to food. I would treat my friend to the live music of my sister Erikah Nocturnal where ever she may be in the city. I would then treat them to good food in the city. I’m a foodie, so there are numerous places we could go, from food trucks to sit down restaurants. I LOVE WINGS AND TACOS! I enjoy patronizing black owned businesses in my city. One of my favorite places to eat is Sleepy’s off 610 & Main. They have the best hot sausage Po Boys! I’d give them a good food truck experience and take them to The Birria Queen located on Almeda Rd. I also like good seafood, and one of my favorite places to go is Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen. There is so much to do in the city, it would just be a spontaneous adventure.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate my shoutout to my children. My children are my reasons for everything that I do in life. They are my daily motivation. I am inspired to push harder, I want them to know that there is strength in everything you do. I want them to see that dreams do come true.
