We had the good fortune of connecting with Patrina Pelton-Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Patrina, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
I began The Business of Charity, LLC because many new non-profit leaders, and some older ones, do not recognize that non-profit organizations are businesses, with all the needs and requirements of a traditional retail business, such as accounting, human resources, and administration. The Business of Charity, LLC helps them to build that infrastructure so they can seek funding, not just donations.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Business of Charity, LLC was launched at Trinity Consulting Services in 2011 to serve as a grant writing services to non-profit organizations. However, what I found was that many non-profit executives, especially those who were leading grassroots, emerging, or adolescent organizations, did not have the infrastructure in place to seek significant grants, especially government or large foundation grants. Therefore, in 2018 I change the name of my company to its present name, and began offering educational services, such as classes and executive coaching to assist non-profit leaders in gaining this information. In 2019, I joined with three non-profit peers, Sharoen Moncriffe, Jackie Autman, and Tangela Harris to offer additional services through our program, MAPS Non-profit Success. Collectively, we now offer services to meet a wide range of needs, including formation, fund development/grant writing, marketing/printing, and executive coaching/self care.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am more of a quiet evening at home host, but Houston offers such a wide range of food and entertainment venues. After CoVid-19, I hope to hang out with my friends at Taste Bar and Kitchen and also UnWine. The food at both venues is delicious, and I would definitely recommend you take your guest there.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shout out is for Shahara Wright, my mentor and owner of The Wright Law Firm and CEO Effect. Shahara helped guide me through the process of launching a profitable business. Before her assistance, I was offering services, but they were not sustaining my business.
