We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Bowden and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
I am a single mother to a 10 year old boy. There are two things that I feel have been most impactful on his life so far. I want him to know that he can be himself and be free to be his own person without the world telling him who he should be. One of my favorite quotes is “be yourself, everyone else is already taken” by Oscar Wilde. The second most impactful thing I’ve tried to do as a mom is teach my son about the value of giving. My dad always said you should leave people better than when you found them. So we do things like buying gifts at Christmas for kids whose parents are incarcerated and we’ve given blankets to the homeless during the winter; small gestures like holding the door for someone or buying lunch for a friend in need. Gandhi said that “the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others” and I truly believe that.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m currently employed as a forensic DNA analyst. It wasn’t an easy journey to get to where I am today, but it was definitely worth it. Job seeking as a new college graduate was difficult, because almost every employer wanted to hire someone with experience. So how would I ever get experience if no one hired me? I kept applying and didn’t give up even when I felt like maybe this wouldn’t be my future. Finally I was hired in 2013 and began my professional career as a DNA analyst.

Throughout the years there have been new challenges and I’ve faced adversity but I’ve learned to walk through every situation without giving up. Robert Frost said that “the best way out is through.” I was taught to always do my best, no matter what the situation was. And as long as I know I did my very best, the rest will always work itself out.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would definitely go to an Astros game. We’d also hit up The Breakfast Klub for some chicken and waffles. In the evening I’d show them Market Street in The Woodlands, where if you’re lucky you can listen to live music from a concert at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavillion, The waterway at night is gorgeous to walk along! We could also take a trolley ride to the Cheesecake Factory and grab some dessert.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Kristen is an incredible friend I met a few years ago at a local farmers market. She owns The Woodlands Candle Co. She has always been a huge supporter of me and genuinely wants to help me grow my small business. Most recently she taught me how to pour candles and she’s always there to answer all my questions and give me new ideas. I want to dedicate this Shoutout to her because I couldn’t have come this far without her! Thank you for believing in me, Kristen!
