We had the good fortune of connecting with Terrance Koontz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Terrance, what do you attribute your success to?
I believe that my ability to connect with others has been my greatest strength. I genuinely care about people and take a deep interest in their lives and stories. Over time, I’ve learned how to leverage these relationships not just for my benefit, but to uplift and support those around me. I’m always thinking about how I can extend a helping hand or be a blessing to someone else. It’s not just something I do; it’s a responsibility I carry as a child of God, to use my gifts and connections to make a positive impact in the lives of others.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been making music since I was a small boy in church. Music has always been a part of my life, from singing gospel to experimenting with different genres. My biggest influences have been Tupac, Kirk Franklin, and mostly Frankie Beverly. I see music as a healing tool, something that helps me process the conditions of the world, whether positive or negative. Music tells the story of the human experience, connecting all races, creeds, and religions. I’ve used it to organize communities throughout the country, and prayerfully, my influence will expand to the world. Music is a tool for healing and unity, and it continues to shape the way I approach both life and my work.

As an “artivist”—an artist-activist—I seek to inspire others through my creative work, merging my passion for music with my commitment to social justice. I believe art, especially music, can break down barriers, foster understanding, and galvanize communities into action. Through my music, I aim to uplift marginalized voices, promote healing, and create lasting social change, making art a central part of the fight for equity and justice.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In an ideal world, on a day that feels like everything’s aligning perfectly, I’d start by bringing folks to the heart of the community—whether it’s a food drive, a youth center, or a church. There’s something deeply fulfilling about serving, giving back to the spaces that shaped me. The sun would be shining just right, a comfortable 72 degrees, with a gentle breeze that makes everything feel easy and joyful.

After that, we’d head to my family’s spot—the Sausage and Boudin Shack on Reed Road (shameless plug!). It’s more than just food; it’s a space where community, culture, and good vibes come together. We’d enjoy a delicious meal, laugh, and soak in the warmth of being with family and friends. And while we’re there, I’d host a concert at the Shack, inviting local artists to share their gifts alongside me. We’d turn the space into a celebration of talent and creativity.

Next, we’d swing by All Real Radio for a sit-down with Denise and Risky. We’d have real conversations, discussing what’s happening in the community and elevating the stories that matter. Rolling in an old-school car or truck, with a sound system playing Frankie Beverly & Maze, the ride would be as smooth as the tunes.

We’d then make a stop at Class Book Store to visit Dara and David Landry. It’s a place where literature and community intersect, and catching up with them would be a highlight. I’d also find time for a bike ride or a workout, because staying active and healthy is key to keeping the spirit and energy high.

We’d end the day in the studio, capturing the essence of our experiences and laying down tracks. As the day winds down, we’d hop on a plane and head to a new city. The excitement would build as we repeat this journey—service, great food, live music, meaningful conversations, and a fresh workout—spreading joy and connection wherever we land. It would be the perfect blend of purpose, creativity, and shared experiences, a true celebration of life and community.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

I am a mosaic of the belief, love, and strength of those who have surrounded me. My mother, a pillar of resilience, and my father, who faced the heavy burden of addiction during the “War on Drugs” era like so many parents of the 80s, shaped my understanding of struggle and perseverance. My uncle, LaBlaque Emcee, not only recognized my potential but guided me into the world of hip hop and spoken word, helping me refine my voice as a storyteller.

Mentors like Charhonda Cox, Liz Wolffe, Michelle Tremillio, and Brianna Brown have poured their wisdom and energy into me, molding me as a professional and pushing me to lead with purpose. The late visual artist Leonard Freeman opened my eyes to the beauty and complexity of the world, while Jesse Watson Jr., my friend and mentor since the age of 17, has walked this path of growth with me, always present, always inspiring.

My wife, LaKeisha Randle Koontz, my best friend and rock, has been my constant source of love and grounding. My children motivate me daily, reminding me of the future we are fighting for. The Brothers of Fermata, an essential part of my village, have stood by me and solidarity, reinforcing the values of brotherhood, loyalty, and leadership.

Together with all those who do liberation work across the globe, we are the guardians of justice. Every piece of who I am has been built by this community, by these hands and hearts that have nurtured me. Most importantly, my success, my very existence, is a testament to the grace and guidance of God and His son Christ. Without them, without this village, I would not be the person I am today.
