We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Meers, Phd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
In a word: freedom. Since becoming a mom I realized how valuable my time is, given how limited it is now. I could no longer work all hours of the day and night and I knew I needed better balance. I realized that the best way to do that was to take complete control over my career. Any time I spend away from my kids needs to have meaning and value behind it, otherwise it is not worth it for me. I truly love helping people get better sleep and live healthier lives, so it feels awesome to be able to do that on my own terms.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own Rhythm Wellness, PLLC, where I specialize in treating adults and children with sleep problems. Our office is located in Bellaire, but I also see people virtually. I love this work because sleep really does impact every facet of our wellbeing. When you suffer to sleep, it can impact your health, your relationships, and your quality of life. It is genuinely thrilling to see people who have been really struggling with sleep not only get better rest, but also see improvements in other facets of life. It is so powerful to see such big changes in a relatively short amount of time.
It hasn’t been easy to build a business and I am still very new to it. The biggest hurdle for me was making the decision to go for it. Up until recently, I have worked on the research side of psychology, studying the treatments that I now provide clinically. I really wrestled with that decision because I genuinely loved research and I value the work tremendously. I also doubted my ability to learn how to run a business. So far, though, I have learned how fulfilling it is to build something from scratch. I love the creativity and freedom I get to have through owning my own business and I realized that if I could get through grad school, I could do this!
I want to let the world know that investing in yourself, whether it’s getting help for sleep, building your own business, or following a different passion, it is absolutely worth it. The best investment you can make is in yourself.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston is a city for food lovers. Any time I want to show off my city I think about the different things we can eat. I love the casual spots like Local Foods and Halal Guys and of course BBQ, Gatlin’s is my favorite. Ninfa’s for Mexican, of course! Plus there are countless good Sushi places.
The Children’s Museum and the Cockrell Butterfly Exhibit at the Museum of Natural Science are my go-to for kids. I also like doing the parks and walking trails. I like Buffalo Bayou park and Cullinan Park down in Sugar Land. There are so many others to choose from as well!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have so many wonderful people in my life who have nurtured my growth and professional development so that I could get to this point. My husband, Chris, supported me through the many very difficult years of my training, through grief and a traumatic pregnancy, and now as I venture into entrepreneurship. He’s given me the confidence to believe in myself. Same for my mom, who is my biggest cheerleader and who sacrifices a lot for me and my family. Finally, my mentor in entrepreneurship, Dr. Elaine Hess, who convinced me that I could do big things.
