We had the good fortune of connecting with Kathy Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kathy, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
I decided to embrace courage and kick fear to the curve. Fear is a stealer and a liar! Fear will rob you from opportunities and it’s a liar because it creates false narratives. ok let’s get back to it….
And by doing this, it allowed me to passionately prepare and plan the quality of our program. By focusing on this I can say we are thankful for the returning students, great feedback from the families and the growth in the relationships we have built with wonderful schools and organizations in the city of Houston.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Master Mindz Academy we provide an enrichment program for kids from PreK-5th grade where we teach them how to build with LEGO® bricks. Our focus is the quality not the quantity of students. I am proud that this program does not exist to benefit just us. We look for ways to enhance the programs, schools and organizations we partner with to grow and build together and better. We must always leave things better than we found it and that’s what excites me when it comes to partnering with others.

I am a proud Hispanic daughter of two very hard working parents that immigrated from Central America. I am thankful for the sacrifice my parents made so I can be able to dream and establish a business that is rooted in hard work and creativity. I have had to go through a roller coaster to get to where I am at today.

I built this business on the gifts, passions and strengths that I have. I have had many fears and challenges however I was able to overcome them with an amazing support surrounding me. In 2022 my life turned completely upside down while I was working on building Master Mindz and I was about to give it all up. I am glad I didn’t I pushed through the fears and doubts. I decided that I would give my best and plan the best program I could have ever gone to as a kid. I kept telling myself what’s the worse that can happen someone says “No” well that didn’t seem too bad.

Business-wise I decided to not focus on the speed but more on the details of the work. This was not easy when I started I did a little every day to water my business plant. The frustrations definitely creeped in and the doubts would take over, however you have to light your match and believe in your gifts and strengths. The challenges will come but you have to be ready to stand on the foundation of your business values. Someone will say “YES” you need to keep sending the emails, keep knocking on the doors.

I have learned that comparison is a waste of time. There is something special about each business and if you focus on planting the details of the work they will grow and bring fruition. And lastly commit to personal growth and learning how to do what you love with excellence.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am California Girl born and raised! I moved to Houston in 2014. And since then I have discovered some great places here. I have also met some of the most nicest people in H-Town! So when my family has come into town this is what we have done:

A good texas steak is a must.
Houston Rodeo, give them a Houston tradition experience
Bucees!
The Galleria Area
We go to Austin!
And I love the locals! My heart and wallet is for the small business so you will find me taking my family to coffee shops, mom and pops and farmers markets.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to Shoutout and say a huge thank you to GOD and My Parents Ramon and Blanca Thomas. My first investors financially and best cheerleaders since day one. My family has played a major role in motivating me to constantly pursue of my goals. My dear friend Megan Kelly who allowed me to sit long hours, days and nights planning Master Mindz on her couch. And lastly I want to shoutout the person who took a chance on me and gave me my first contract Traci Callender she is genuinely a woman who wants to see others win. Thank you Traci!
