We had the good fortune of connecting with Mali Baker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mali, what do you want people to remember about you?
I would be happy if I was remembered simply for my kindness! In general, I focus on being kind to others and giving back when I can. I’m currently participating in a fundraiser for the Make-a-Wish foundation and looking into other ways to get involved in my community. If there is anything I’d like for others to take away from what I do it’s that it was always done with kindness. After all, Mimi’s is Made With Love!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Mimi’s Sweets started out as just an idea while I was in the process of finding a new job. I had just gotten laid of from a comfortable career and was unsure of what would happen next. I just knew that I wanted to do something for myself this time and build something for my family. I’ve always been a baker, though I never put any thought into turning that into a business until my family started to suggest it. I LOVE to feed people, I can’t explain the joy I get when people are excited about the treats I create. This was really a no-brainer. Choosing to pick it up and run with it was easy, but bringing it to life was definitely challenging. So many factors go into starting a business and I was coming in blind, with no true business ownership experience. I had to market, I had to create a brand and a logo, I had to create menus and find local markets to attend. I had never done any of this before so it was very much a learning process. I’ve learned so much about the ups and downs of owning a business. The biggest lesson has been to just persevere and trust the process. As rewarding as this journey has been, I have also been discouraged at times. It’s important that you just remember the goal and keep pushing towards it. While I am still new and still growing, I want everyone to know how much I genuinely cherish being able to share my talents and bring some joy to others through food.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Houston is such a big city with so many things to do, it’s hard to pick just a few things, but I am a huge foodie! It’s very likely the first thing we would do is find some pho or sushi! There are some great mom and pop spots all around Houston it’s so hard to choose! I am actually located somewhat in the country, so it is also on the itinerary to visit some outdoor spots nearby. One of the coolest places I’ve been to was a little spot in Waller called Blue Heron Farm! It’s a beer garden with goats everywhere! You can have a drink, a snack, pet the goats, there’s a giant tortoise. A must see. The next best thing is the Farmer’s Markets and Flea Markets. It’s always a good time being outdoors and supporting other artisans and local businesses. Houston has so many things to offer, I just couldn’t name it all! But we would definitely be doing things that involve being outside, eating, and shopping!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The support behind me is the driving factor of my business. My family has been so great about encouraging me to do the scary stuff and even helping me build my brand. My big sister specifically has played a very big role in bringing Mimi’s to life! From brand design to even investing in me. My partner helps me market and keeps my spirits high when I feel discouraged. And, of course, my babies are my greatest motivators! My little village deserves so much recognition in this journey, I definitely couldn’t have gotten here without them.
