Meet Jessica Arnold | 3 Pretty Girls Photography

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Arnold and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My very first Christmas of being a new mom, my mom got me a camera; after that I spent hours upon hours dressing my daughter up and making her take a bunch of pictures. By the time I had my 3rd daughter I had gotten pretty good, and I have always loved taking pictures of my girls. My friends started asking me to take their photos, then it turned into my friends friends, and now I get to meet new people every day. When I had my 3rd daughter, I wanted to take a chance and quit my job and explore if I could make photography work as a job and although it was extremely terrifying to quit my job, I took the leap with full support from my husband. I never in a million years would have thought I would be where I am today, and my business being as successful as it has been.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being a photographer you have to have a ton of patience. Most of your clientele is children and you have to be willing to be silly with them and make jokes, you really have to get on their level to get the best smiles out of them. One thing I cherish is getting to know my regulars and hearing about their school year or trips they are taking. Honestly photography is an intimate art, I have had the privilege of capturing babies first photos and the honor of taking some peoples last photos, and all of the little moments in between. It’s not as simple as point and click. I am trying to capture those memories that will forever mean something to you.
The biggest lesson I have learned is you have to have thick skin. You can send over the most beautiful photo with the most perfect sunset in the background and every single person will think it’s gorgeous, but someone might be disappointed in their appearance which is out of my control. Also, you can send over great sessions that you spent tons of time on and hear nothing back from clients or even have people say they don’t like them.
Another lesson I have learned is to roll with the changes and always try to get better. Trends come and go, and you need to stay on top of them while being true to who you are as a photographer as well. By getting better, keep shooting there is always ways to improve.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If the rodeo was going on I would take them to the Houston Livestock show and rodeo. That is one of my favorite times of the year. Or I would take them to an Astros game. I would also suggest walking around the waterway or some of the local parks in the Woodlands. Such as Rob Fleming Park, Burroughs Park, or walk around Old town Spring. Food wise always Tex Mex. I LOVE El Palenque in Spring. They have the best jumbo margaritas around.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My biggest support came from my family. My girls were a huge inspiration and continue to be to this day. A big shout out to all of my clients who have been with me from the beginning and took a chance on me, thanks to them for letting me photograph such important milestones and events, as well as all of my clients for letting me capture such important parts of their lives. My husband for learning how to edit to help me with my workflow. Burning the candle at both ends was exhausting me and he came in and relieved a lot of my stress by learning to edit and being more up to date with the newer programs. I once was the better editor but now my husband has surpassed me.
