We had the good fortune of connecting with Cassandra Flores and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cassandra, how do you think about risk?
Risk in my photography journey is what has shaped me and taught me the most.
I naturally feel anxious stepping into unfamiliar spaces, but I’ve learned to embrace the unknown because every time I do, I come out wiser and more capable. As a creative, it’s easy to get in your head, especially when taking on projects where you may not have all the answers or experience yet. Self-doubt creeps in often, but I’ve learned that what matters most is showing up and taking the risk to grow. Some of the most valuable lessons and opportunities I’ve had came from betting on myself before I felt fully ready.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My spark for photography truly ignited about three years ago, when I had the opportunity to return to my home country of Mexico after being away for so many years. That trip shifted everything for me. I experienced a wave of culture shock, but also a deep sense of reconnection. Coming back, I began to notice just how beautifully diverse my city really is, and how many spaces exist here that make me feel close to home. That realization pushed me to start documenting people, traditions, and moments that carry identity and emotion, things that feel real and rooted.

What got me to where I am today was leaning into vulnerability, reaching out to my community, and showing up consistently, even when I doubted myself. My journey hasn’t been easy. Photography, like many creative careers, comes with ups and downs. There are months where you feel like you are doing amazing, and others where you question everything. But I’ve learned to be grateful for the ride. Every challenge has taught me something, whether it’s about my craft, my resilience, or how to navigate this industry with heart.

What sets my work apart is the emotion and cultural depth I aim to capture. Whether I’m photographing a quiet moment between loved ones or creating content for a brand, I want my work to feel like a breath of fresh air, something that invites reflection, connection, and presence. Through my brand Floreslente, I hope to honor stories that matter and highlight the beauty in everyday people and bold cultures. I do this work because I believe our roots deserve to be seen, felt, and celebrated.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First stop would definitely be Las Perras Cafe, hands down one of my favorite spots for coffee, vibes, and community. It’s Latina-owned, full of love, and a beautiful space to connect. (And yes, I may be a little biased because my photography is showcased there, but that just makes it even more special!)
For brunch, we’re hitting up Dandelion Cafe in the Heights. Heads up there’s always a line, but SO worth it. The food is incredible, and it’s one of those spots that feels like a neighborhood gem.
For a night out, we’re heading to Neon Boots on a Friday because that’s Latin Night, and the music is unmatched! It’s an LGBTQ+ friendly spot where you can dance your heart out and feel completely at ease. Whether it’s cumbia, reggaeton, or bachata, the vibes are always right.
We’d also make a stop at Botonica, a new craft cocktail bar that honors the spirits and cultures of Latin America. Their drinks are top-tier, the atmosphere is intimate, and the playlist makes you want to stay all night.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a special shoutout to my dear friends DJ Rosez and Nina Nino.
They’ve supported me endlessly and constantly push me to reach goals even in moments when I underestimate myself. Their encouragement has played such a huge role in helping me grow, both personally and professionally. I’m grateful to have people like them in my corner who believe in my vision even when I hesitate to.
