We had the good fortune of connecting with Tawnie Breaux and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tawnie, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
Good things. Bad things. Who knows?’

I learned it from my amazing teacher, Rao. Here’s the story he shared:
There was once a very poor old man who dreamed of wealth. One day, his bought a house. The first day he had it, it kicked out a fence and ran away. The neighbors said, “Oh no, that’s terrible!” But the old man simply smiled and said, “Good things. Bad things. Who knows?”

A few weeks later, that very horse returned with several wild horses in tow. It led a small herd right to his doorstep. Now he owned many horses! Everyone exclaimed, “How wonderful!” Yet he replied, “Good things. Bad things. Who knows?”

Not long after, his only son was riding one of the horses when he fell off and badly broke his leg. Friends shook their heads in sympathy: “Oh, that’s so sad!” And still the man said, “Good things. Bad things. Who knows?”

In time, the son’s leg healed—but he was left with a limp. A war broke out, and the king’s soldiers came for every all the young men in the village. Families wept as their sons were taken to battle. But because of his limp, the old man’s son was spared. Once again, the old man simply said, “Good things. Bad things. Who knows?”

This story reminds me—and everyone I share it with—that life unfolds in mysterious ways. What seems like misfortune today may become a blessing tomorrow, and vice versa. Whenever something happens, big or small, I pause, breathe, and say to myself:
“Good things. Bad things. Who knows?”

It helps me stay open, resilient, and grateful for every twist and turn life brings.

We’d definitely spend Saturday morning at Goat Yoga at Rose Therapeutic Farms, there’s nothing quite like moving through sun salutations while sweet little goats roam and cuddle. It’s playful, grounding, and a perfect way to start the weekend.

On Sunday, we’d slow it all down with Zen Out Sunday, my weekly afternoon retreat in the Houston Heights. It’s the ultimate reset: yoga, meditation, journaling, a cold plunge, and a peaceful sound bath at Menil Park.

During the week, I’d take them to explore the Heights Mercantile shops, grab a coffee at The Coffee Shop. Evenings would be spent relaxing on a patio, catching live music at The Walking Stick, or just sharing laughs on my patio. Houston has so many hidden gems, but the real magic is in slowing down and soaking it all in with someone you love.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe a huge thank you to my Zen Out Sunday Crew, whose laughter, support, and shared energy make every practice feel like home. To Rose Therapeutic Farms—for creating a magical space where goat yoga, fresh air, and soulful connection remind me why I teach in the first place. To the weekly sound bath at Menil Park with Guru Thanet, whose healing vibrations and sacred soundscapes have been the balm my spirit didn’t even know it needed. And to everyone who has attended my yoga retreats over the years—your presence, openness, and trust have made this journey possible.
