We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Justin, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk has always been a part of my life and career. Playing college and professional baseball as a closer taught me a lot about stepping into high-pressure situations—you don’t succeed without being willing to take risks and trust your preparation. That experience carried over into my career outside of sports. I’ve never been afraid to follow what I love and pursue my passions, even if it meant taking a leap into something new. I’ve worked in different fields, but what I value most in HVAC is that the risk is balanced with purpose—being able to build an honest living while keeping families comfortable and cool in their homes. For me, risk isn’t something to shy away from; it’s an opportunity to grow and to do work that truly matters.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career in HVAC really started with a love for solving problems and working with my hands. I’ve always been the type of person who takes things apart just to see how they’re built, and that curiosity naturally led me into this field. I joined Houston West Services when my father-in-law, who built this company from the ground up over 35 years ago, needed someone to train to eventually take over so he could retire. What sets us apart is that we’ve stayed true to being a family-run business that values honesty, professionalism, and personal relationships with our customers. He grew this business entirely through word of mouth and referrals, which speaks volumes about the trust and quality behind our work.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting Houston for a week, I’d make sure they got the full experience of what makes this city great. We’d definitely catch an Astros game at Minute Maid Park—it’s hard to beat that energy. I’d also take them to a local comedy club for some laughs, and we’d check out some live music, because Houston’s scene is underrated but full of talent.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a huge shoutout to my wife, Lexis. She’s been my biggest supporter and encourager throughout every chapter of my journey. She’s also building her own path in an incredible way, pursuing her yoga career by bringing mindfulness and healing to others in our community. Watching her follow her passions and impact people’s lives has inspired me to do the same in my own work. I couldn’t ask for a better partner, and a lot of who I am today is thanks to her love and encouragement.
