Hi Candis, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process started not with a new idea, but with realizing I had run out of excuses for an old one. I always wanted to launch my own tax preparation service, but the fear of taking the time to build the business held me back for years—even after I secured my EFIN (Electronic Filing Identification Number) from the IRS. The true catalyst came when I received a letter from the IRS essentially saying, ‘use it or lose it.’ That ‘now or never’ moment instantly clarified that the time was finally right to stop procrastinating and launch the business I had been preparing for.
With my extensive accounting background, which includes a master’s degree in Management Accounting and being actively in the process of sitting for the Uniform CPA Exam (with two sections already passed)—I quickly saw the opportunity to offer more than just seasonal tax work. My thought process shifted from ‘tax preparer’ to ‘comprehensive financial partner.’ I realized I could leverage my deep accounting knowledge to provide bookkeeping and business consulting services to both individuals and small businesses. This is how the vision for Ferguson Bookkeeping and Tax LLC was born—a full-service firm built on a strong technical foundation.

With my extensive accounting background, including a Master’s degree in Management Accounting and being an active CPA candidate, we offer a level of technical expertise often reserved for larger, more expensive firms.

That’s why our services and prices are catered to the client’s current income and specific needs, rather than a set price for all. Our Proudest Achievements
I am most proud of two things:
1. Our Founding Mission: We’ve kept our promise to make expert tax and bookkeeping services accessible. Since our inception in August 2024, we’ve successfully built a business where the client’s financial health is the primary focus, not just the transaction.
2. Our Expansion into Education: I’m incredibly excited about expanding to include a training academy for tax preparers and offering professional tax software. This allows us to not only serve our clients but also contribute to the growth and professionalism of the wider tax industry. It transforms us into a true financial ecosystem.
The Business Journey: From Idea to Launch
The journey to starting Ferguson Bookkeeping and Tax LLC was not easy; it was a battle against procrastination.
I had the expertise and the certification (my EFIN) for years, but the sheer thought of taking the time to build the business held me back. I was essentially sitting on my potential.
The challenge was overcome by a definitive external push: receiving a “use it or lose it” letter from the IRS regarding my EFIN. That moment provided the necessary deadline and urgency to stop thinking and start doing. I immediately channeled my frustration with myself into action, leveraging my existing accounting credentials to launch not just a tax business, but a full-service firm offering bookkeeping and consulting.
Lessons Learned
1. Don’t Wait for Perfect: My biggest lesson is that action overcomes anxiety. I spent years waiting for the “perfect” time to do the research and build the plan. In reality, the most critical step was simply launching, knowing that the rest of the plan could be refined as we went.
2. A Support System is Non-Negotiable: The business would not be here without my daughter, who served as my “level head” and accountability partner, and the professional support from Xuan Vo of Boss Media Maven, who handled the crucial task of visibility. Knowing what you are good at, and hiring or leaning on others for everything else, is key to sustainable growth.

First and foremost, I want to recognize my daughter. While the idea for the tax business was an old one, she was the key driving force that helped me move past the procrastination and commit to launching. She served as my indispensable “level head” throughout the entire process. Building a business is an emotional roller coaster, and her role was to keep me grounded, focused, and accountable. From day one, she listened to every idea, offered valuable suggestions, and essentially acted as my first, most trusted consultant. I ran all my major decisions and strategic thoughts by her before committing to anything. Her consistent love, encouragement, and honest feedback were vital in shaping the early vision of the company.
