We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Armijo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Heather, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I’ll be honest, when I started my business 12 years ago, I was terrible at managing a balance between my work and personal life. At the time, I thought being fully booked meant working every day and being too busy to keep up. Raising kids of my own, I quickly realized this needed to change.
While I wanted to continue to grow my business, a successful business can’t possibly be successful if I can’t handle the growth.
A few years into the business I began to change what being “fully booked” meant to me. I created a strict schedule for sessions, editing time and even answering emails at a certain time. Yes, this meant turning clients away when our scheduled didn’t align and reminding inquiries to allow 24-48 hours for responses.
Creating a life where I could “clock out” to spend time with my family helped me “clock in” and give my all to my clients during their session. I wasn’t feeling stretched thin or undervalued by clients because we were respecting each other’s time.

I believe when life feels balanced, creativity thrives—and that ultimately leads to a better experience for every family who trusts me to capture their memories.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
People often see my current business and assume the path was straightforward and maybe even easy, but my career has been built slowly, intentionally, and through a lot of seasons of growth.

I started my photography business in 2013 while working full-time at an oil and gas law firm. Photography began as a creative outlet and a second job. In those early years, life was full. I was balancing a career and building a business, while raising young children.
As demand grew, I made the decision to transition to part-time at my corporate job so I could invest more into photography. Eventually, with the support of my family, clients, and community, I took the leap into running my business full time.

One thing that sets me apart is that I’ve never approached photography as simply taking pictures. My goal has always been to create an experience where families feel cared for, comfortable, and confident that every detail has been considered. Whether it’s providing a fully stocked newborn studio, guiding parents through wardrobe choices, or creating timeless images that won’t feel trendy years from now, I want clients to feel at ease from beginning to end.

There were challenges along the way. Learning photography as a self-taught artist required persistence, investment, and humility. I spent years learning through books, online resources, photography communities, workshops, and hands-on mentoring. Every season of growth required stepping outside my comfort zone and continuing to learn.

What I want people to know about my brand and my story is simple: behind every image is someone who deeply values family, connection, and preserving moments that pass too quickly. I know firsthand how quickly children grow and how meaningful photographs become over time. That perspective shapes every session and every family I have the privilege to work with.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Day 1- Get settled and experience Old Katy
Start slow with coffee and a walk through Historic Downtown Katy. There’s something about the mix of old and new that reflects the spirit of this area. Grab breakfast at Southern Dough Baking Company, browse the shops like KT Antiques, and spend time exploring before heading over to Katy Heritage Park to learn a little about the history. End the evening at Old Katy Patio and enjoy how family-centered and relaxed Katy feels.

Day 2- Houston day trip
One of the best parts about Katy is being close enough to Houston to enjoy world-class museums, restaurants, and entertainment, then come back to a quieter pace at the end of the day.

Day 3- Support local
One of my favorite things about Katy is the community. Spend the day visiting local shops such as Tiffany’s Tiny Flower Shop. Enjoy a spa treatment at Ara Med Spa. Have lunch at one of the three Katy locations of Borders.

Day 4 – Family fun day
Spend the day making memories—visit local entertainment spots, grab ice cream at Howdy’s, and enjoy the slower pace that makes Katy such a great place to raise a family. Visit the Farmer’s Market at the Rice Dryers and enjoy meeting friends at Katy Beer Garden.

Day 5 – Parks and being outdoors
Katy has some beautiful outdoor spaces. Spend the morning at Mary Jo Peckham Park walking the trails, fishing, or just enjoying being outside.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Absolutely… I’d dedicate my shoutout to the Katy community that supported me while building my business. Starting my photography business in 2013 while working full time and raising kids meant there were a lot of long days and moments where growth felt slow.
My family supported the dream through every stage, and my clients trusted me with some of their most meaningful milestones year after year. I’m especially grateful for the families who returned again and again and helped turn a small side business into a full-time career. Their support gave me the opportunity to build a business that lets me create meaningful work while still being present for my own family.
