We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Boesen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have a healthcare background that encompasses both clinical and Human Resources. My family started MLC Associates LLC in 2009 after both our parents died and I took it over for my speaking business. My last corporate position was in organizational development and leadership training. I gave a lot of presentations and training! My first thought was to focus on training and speaking. It began with compassion in the workplace because that spoke to me and was relevant at that time (I still think it is!). I was still putting on my HR and OD hat and consulting, along with career coaching and resume writing. One of the best things I did was become a Certified Master Coach. I loved it all that but when my husband had health issues and we became plant-based, my writing, videos, and podcasting pivoted in that direction. The coaching education was invaluable as it helped me write material from a self-development perspective. ItsYourSeason.life is the second pivot and rebranding and I think it says it all, don’t you? My thought process for this next phase of business is to bring all the skills I have acquired, my healthcare and coaching, love of writing, and bring it all together to build a community of wellness-minded individuals together. We can celebrate life, health and everything, every day at any age.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a home chef and have completely embraced transforming non-plant based food to plant-based. I love creating the dish and photographing it so it might inspire others to consider plant-based eating. The funny part is that in my high school annual I was a Who’s Who and I wrote that I enjoyed cooking! I forgot about that.:-) I would not have probably made it as a chef. I wanted to be a writer and journalist but wound up in healthcare – which was a real blessing. I worked in ICU, Open heart recovery, rehab, and HR. All this experience and training I compounded so now, it is incredibly easy to put together a cooking workshop or write a cookbook. I love the idea I can do the things I love: Cook, write, and speak to inspire.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Goodness, people come visit us all the time. We are in Colorado! We would do definitely do outdoors – hike in the Rockies, river rafting on the Poudre River nearby, eat lunch at Mishawaka which has a wonderful deck overlooking the Poudre River. On a golden afternoon, it is spectacular. We would go to the two underground bars in Fort Collins – Ace Gillets and Social for sure. I love both. Each have their own unique vibe. There are 20+ breweries in Fort Collins. We would go to Maxline for sure. As a visitor, we would to the tour of New Belgium as well. We have one of the few drive-in movie theaters – definitely do that! Go to the Exchange downtown – they have a great outdoor space for the summer. Small cafes and great small bands that play.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The first that comes to mind is Toastmasters. I was always shy but knew I had a voice inside to bring out. I had ideas and encouragement to share. And I was having to do more and more speaking in my work. I joined Toastmasters in 1990 and participated for nine years. I was close to completing my Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM). I learned so much about the different methods and approaches to public speaking not to mention basic meeting management and giving productive feedback. The second is the Center For Coaching Certification. Many people hang a sign saying they are a coach without any training. I went through the complete Master Coach certification process. In addition, for years, I was certified through the International Coaching Federation. If you want to understand coaching as a profession, I recommend the Center for Coaching Certification program.
