We had the good fortune of connecting with Deborah Douglas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deborah, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I am a native Houstonian. As a child and into my late teens, I was a dancer. Tap, Jazz, Ballet and Arcrobats. After graduating high school and moving away from home I was introduced to karate and yoga. I have grown up around movement and movement is a major way to stay healthy. I always knew how important movement and exercise was and know this is what has brought me to where I am today. 6th degree Black Belt holding the title of Renshi, A Reiki Master, Certified Aromatherapist, Tai Chi & Yoga Instructor. At present I am the owner of LifeArts, The Energy Movement Studio and known as a Stress Elimination Specialist as all the services and classes offered help with stress reduction and relaxation. Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing. Aromatherapy is the blending of essential oils to support the body’s natural healing process. Tai Chi is an internal Martial Art and is considered a moving meditation. All movements are done slowly and methodically. It has all the benefits of yoga except you do not get on the floor. Hatha Yoga utilizes easy gentle stretches and asanas (postures). The emphasis is on the breath. Yoga has many benefits including helps reduce stress, tension and anxiety, it keeps the body agile and full of vitality, it strengthens the bones and promotes balance. Crystal Therapy is the placement of crystals on or around the body to help with the body’s natural healing process. For my complete story visit LifeArtsTx.com click on About
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started my karate training and yoga practice in 1974 and started teaching karate at brown belt level with the City of Bellaire Parks & Recreation Department. For over 25 years, I owned a karate dojo (training hall) in Houston, Texas. After the closing of the dojo, I turned to my yoga practice and opened a yoga studio in 2013 and ran a successful yoga business til 2019 when I closed my studio. In 2020 I opened LifeArts – The Energy Movement Studio. Everything I do has to do with connecting to the healing energies within us. I give Reiki treatments, Aromatherapy consultations and Crystal Therapy. During the pandemic which started back in March of 2020 I started ZOOMing all my Tai Chi, Yoga and Chair Yoga sessions. Running your own business is never really easy but when you do what you love and love what you do, you make it work. I love helping others attain better health the natural way through movement of energy. If you’re not moving, you’re STUCK!!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am one of the most down to earth people if there ever was one. My home is on a small lake so we wouldn’t have to go far just to enjoy the outdoors and nature. I have a personal chef, Michael, who happens to be my husband. Because of the pandemic we would spend precious time together right in our backyard. Eating and drinking to our hearts content. But if we did want to venture out I would visit the Zoo and the Houston Arboretum. Quail Valley, the subdivision I live in of Missouri City also has several nice Parks to hang out at. We have several great restaurants in the area, The Texas Biergarten, Brandani’s, Alex’s Kitchen just to name a few. Also in our neighborhood, we have the City Centre of MIssouri City which is a Golf Club and a beautiful venue for parties and weddings.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First my parents, Bruce & Louise McKinley, as parents they allowed us kids to make mistakes and loved us unconditionally no matter the problems we created or the paths we chose to follow. My original karate instructor Michael Arnold from Bellaire, Texas. My yoga teacher Lex Gillan, the founder of the Yoga Institute in Houston, Texas. My Yoga student Nancy, who first introduced me to the healing energy of Reiki and Andrea Butje founder of The Aromahead Institute where I got my certification in Aromatherapy. Ashley Leavy, Founder & Educational Director of the Love & Light School of Crystal Therapy. Mary Blanchard (deceased) who introduced me to Wu Hao Tai Chi.
