We had the good fortune of connecting with Christine Green and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christine, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor for my success has been that I love helping people, and I am doing what I love. Every day I can help my students get one step closer to the secondary school, college, or the career they want. With my 27 years of career experience, I am also able to help groom my tutors, mostly graduate college students, for their upcoming careers and furthering their professional development.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Academic Coaching, Inc. has now grown to 40 tutors and provides academic tutoring for all subjects, test preparation for SAT,ACT, ISEE and HSPT, and executive functioning coaching for students ranging from kindergarten through college. Until Covid-19 occurred, we primarily provided one-on-one tutoring in our clients’ homes. Now we are tutoring mostly over Zoom to minimize the risk of Covid-19 transmission. We have found that with touchscreen computers we can teach all levels as most touchscreens allow students and tutors to write on the same screen, almost like you were together in the same room. I think what sets us apart is the fact that we not only provide tutoring and test prep, but also work with the parents and teachers to ensure the tutoring is effective. From my experience with the schools and various tests, I can pinpoint how many hours of tutoring a student needs to bring their grade up or achieve the test score they want. I then place them with a tutor by matching their personality, subject matter expertise needs, and schedule. The tutor works with them consistently each week until the end of the semester or until their placement test is complete. This allows for consistency of schedule which the students, parents, and tutors like. I have learned so much about business as we have continued to grow. We brought on our first tutor, outside of myself, in 2012. Since that time, we have been steadily growing at a rate of 45% per year for the last 9 years. This has provided the opportunity for me to learn about taxes, risk management, human behavior, human resource management, and time management in a way I never imagined. Learning to manage other tutors and the larger number of students was a challenge at first, but I then realized that the challenge was an opportunity to help each person develop into the individual they wanted to become. By focusing cooperatively on achieving those goals, and working from a point of commonality and respect, I have found the challenge is diminished. Covid-19 was also a huge challenge for us, but we were able to scramble to get our tutors trained on Zoom. Because of remote tutoring, we now have students in various parts of Texas and other states. Along the way, I have learned to be proactive in recognizing what other people need, and work as hard as I can to deliver service that fills those needs. Prayer is a big part of my life, and over the years, it has proven to help me get through the difficult times. Prayer does work!! If there is one thing I want people to know about our brand it is that we will always be honest and upfront in approach to helping our clients and tutors achieve their goals. Academic Coaching, Inc. is a for proftit company, but we work hard to be a good citizen in our community and help others as much as we can.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This question is a bit more difficult to answer in the midst of the Covid-19 Pandemic, but I would recommend a trip to the Galveston beach. While in Galveston, I always enjoy a dinner or lunch at Gaido’s Restaurant. NASA is also a fun time, along with a trip to Discovery Green and Memorial Park. For dinner closer to Houston, I recommend Piatto Ristorante in the Galleria area. While in the Galleria area, I would encourage a day of window shopping in the Galleria Mall.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to recognize my husband. While we were still dating, he recognized my 5 hour per week side tutoring gig could grow to help more kids. I am very familiar with the inner loop private school curriculum and teachers from my years attending and teaching in the inner loop schools. By combining my knowledge of the schools with tutoring from subject matter experts we could achieve better results than stand-alone tutoring. And most importantly, my husband recognized how much I really care. I now have 40 tutors that I work with and stand fast by our rule that I will not work with any tutor that does not care as much as I do. That level of caring really propels us to knock down the obstacles that are causing our students to stuggle.
