We had the good fortune of connecting with Tauran Woo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tauran, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I think it was obvious from a young age that I was definitely creative, and probably wouldn’t be fulfilled unless I figured a way to be creative or do creative work for a living. I guess I pursued it because not pursuing it would be resigning myself to a life of misery! Although pursuing a creative career may not feel like a practical or stable choice, there are many rewards that can be achieved by doing and being excellent at the thing that you love. I encourage the brave, the bold, and the talented to follow their heart and add beauty to the world by contributing your creative voice!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a wedding and portrait photographer. I’ve been doing this for 15 years, and of course, there was a lot of learning and mistakes that were made along the way, but I had many people who were willing to teach me along the way. No business is easy, and the wedding photography business is no exception. Learning the technical aspects, artistic principles, business, advertising, networking, equipment, software! So much to keep up with! It’s a constant juggling act. My photography and business are a direct extension of my creativity, and my clients are an extension of my own family.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many great spots in town, you can’t go wrong. Be sure to check out downtown, and set aside the whole day to explore the restaurants and hot spots. As an alternative, If you’re in town, why not stop by my house and hang out? Haha!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I definitely have people who have believed in me, mentored me, and pushed me to be better. First shoutout – my wife! A remarkably patient woman who never stopped believing in me and supported me in all of my endeavors! Secondly, many of the teachers who have given me the tools and confidence to keep pursuing the dream – Scott Robert Lim, my photography mentor! I wouldn’t be successful in photography without him, and a great friend as well. Many of my teachers in High school, as well as university and art school really shaped my mind in the early days. Also, the luminaries, most of whom I have never met – Avedon, Vincent Peters, Syd Mead, Miyazaki, Dorthea Lange, Christopher Nolan, the list goes on beyond what is possible on this page. Thank you to them for inspiring and illuminating the way.
