We had the good fortune of connecting with John Charles Dailey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi John Charles, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
I think in some ways making art is a way of processing and coping with things internally that seem out of our control. In that way, I don’t even know how I would give it up. Throughout life though you have to constantly prioritize things and figure out where you want to place your bets or if it’s time to fold.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In 2019 I started a music and art collective based out of San Antonio called the Wolf Gala. I was writing a lot of different material and had so many different talented friends who were multi-instrumentalists whom I’ve been recording with for years. I wanted to reconstruct the format of assigned roles in bands so we could yield as much product as possible. So much like the infamous Wrecking Crew or Motown musicians we would have a group of studio players that could just come in and knock out all the different records that were being created out of the same studio to give it a certain “sound”. Along with the music we can do all of the artwork, videos, photos etc… all under the same umbrella and be self sufficient. Eventually I plan on expanding into more film art projects.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d take ’em to Gold for coffee, Miss Chickpea’s Cafetal for breakfast, a nice bike ride around Woodlawn Island and two-steppin’ at the Lonesome Rose (when it’s safe again)
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d definitely like to give a shout out to Robot Monster music shop (San Antonio), Hogwild Records and Sunflower and Friends (Lockhart). Sunflower and Friends is an amazing local music shop that specializes in vintage music gear and even offers lessons. A truly fun and friendly place that services all of your analog needs.
