We had the good fortune of connecting with Kirian and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kirian, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
Making music and writing songs is about more than just recording words over a beat. Those words have to mean something to you if they’re going to mean anything to anyone that happens to be listening. If anything, I’ve learned that there’s no better way to be creative than being yourself. Everybody has positive and negative attributes, but it seems as if only the positive aspects of life are represented and it’s a bit unrealistic. I want someone to get to know more about who I am when they listen to me and that means exploring and presenting different corners of my life. I’ve made plenty of mistakes – I don’t know anyone who hasn’t – but as I continue to grow, I can say that I’m proud of the man that I see when I look in the mirror and it’s that man that I want to show to people, flaws and all.Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I make music. More specifically I rap and I sing a little bit too. I was born in Ibadan, Nigeria but I spent my formative years growing up in the UK. My art is such a reflection of who I am as an individual. Every word that I write comes from such a real place. I feel like my uniqueness comes because I know that I have fresh and original takes on what it’s like to navigate life as someone my age and I deliver my message in a way that only I can do it. Music is my favourite form of self-expression and I always bring a sense of joy to my work and I want others to feel that sense of joy when they listen. I want my music to be a sanctuary for those who need it, as music has always been a sanctuary for me when I needed it. Furthermore I just want people to be confident in expressing themselves. When I write, I feel as though my music is one of few aspects of my life that is completely uncorrupted by outside opinions; I get to be unapologetically me and it’s the most freeing feeling. Getting to this point was far from easy, but I have the most amazing support system behind me and I can’t be thankful enough. Knowing that I have people in my life that I can go to no matter what the weather looks like has made this journey so much easier.Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I think the first place we’d go would be La Cantera in Northwest. It’s this big outdoor mall and it’s definitely one of my favourite places to shop or even window shop if you just want to get out of the house – and they have some really nice places to eat over there too. Six Flags Fiesta Texas is a must if you come to San Antonio but I’d wait until it gets dark before going because the lights in the park are always something to see. The Tower of the America’s downtown is a must too – it’s a 750-ft restaurant with an observation deck that has a killer view of the entire city. To top it all off, there’s a small spot near UTSA called The Block and it’s a nice outdoor night venue for college kids; great place to socialise and hang out, maybe meet some new people.Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m giving the biggest shout out to my family. When I first decided that I wanted to make music, they were clearly skeptical about it, but as soon as they realised that I had such a love and passion for the music that I make, so much changed. They constantly push me to be better and I don’t think I would be half the man I am today without their help. My parents sacrificed so much to give my siblings and I a better life and I couldn’t be more grateful for that. My siblings are my best friends and have always been right there beside me when it counted the most. I owe my family everything and I plan to spend the rest of my life looking for ways to repay them.
