We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylor Norton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taylor, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have grown up with a love for fashion and always intrigued by the idea of owning my own boutique. After spending many years in the retail industry, I knew this was the right path. Boutiques are known for having unique fashion, but that typically comes at a price. My hope in starting my boutique was to provide fun and unique fashion, but at a price that every woman can afford. My heart is in Texas, so through my boutique, not only am I chasing my dreams, but I have also used this as opportunity to shine a light on other small businesses in Texas.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
MaKenzie Layne Boutique was founded during a time when many were running away from starting something new. In stead, this mother daughter team put our life long dreams together and founded a boutique that strives to bring fashion for all ages. We have been in business for less than a year and the biggest challenge is accepting that it takes time. We all have our own journey and we have to focus on the accomplishments we have achieved thus far. It is far too easy to want to wake up tomorrow having a well known brand with thousands of followers. But how do you appreciate that? Instead, we wake up each day thinking of new ways to introduce our brand to new people and with each sale, we truly value that customer. It has been hard work, but it has made the journey that much sweeter.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Having grown up in Houston, I have come to love this city! I believe we have one of the top notch museum districts and would certainly include a day spent scoping out the Holocaust Museum or the Fine Arts Museum. You can’t forget sports; especially the Astros! Enjoying Torchy’s Tacos while watching a baseball game is certainly a Houston must! Heading down to the ocean, eating a burger at The Spot right off the seawall is always a great time or stoping by The Strand for some shopping and drinks.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to acknowledge my husband. I have read countless books, watched many other entrepreneurs, but it wasn’t until I met my husband that I truly took the risk of opening my own boutique. The poor guy has listened to hours of me rambling through ideas, helped me with numerous projects and most importantly been my biggest cheerleader during this journey.
