We had the good fortune of connecting with BlackLand and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi BlackLand, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
DRANK ANTHONY: In the words of 21 Savage ALOT! When Covid hit we both were working on site at our 9 to 5. So when we got sent home we thought it would only be for maybe a week or two tops… That was March 20th of 2020. But we balanced it pretty well if I can say so. Ma’LIK: We try and make a schedule and stick to it, so with work, home life and studio time we divide the times as equally as possible. But I hate to say it at times home gets the most lol but we have managed to make it work out still.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Well, we do music! DRANK ANTHONY: What sets us apart from others other than lyrics and subject matter would be the quality of work we put out. Ma’LIK: All of the projects and videos we put out have been carefully thought-out and placed together in a manner to show we are not amateurs anymore. DRANK ANTHONY: I for one am proud that we have not given up yet lol! But naw, I would have to say i’m proud that we still have the hunger and drive to see this dream out. I know for myself, in the past year I have directed most of our videos and that has given me a sense of accomplishment. Ma’LIK: I knew he was going to say that lol Spike Lee Jr over here. But for me, besides the constant growth of our craft and getting that nod from our rap community, I’m most proud that I’m a father now. My son has given me more gas on this road to success. When he hears our songs or videos he pops his head and starts dancing lol. DRANK ANTHONY: Yea we have had him in the studio a few times and he’s looking around and bopping when the beat plays ha! And he has been in what the past 3-4 videos I think. And getting to where we are today professionally took a lot of trial and error. We have been told “No” more than we like to admit but that just adds ammo into our clip to shoot to be the best. But hard work and building a genuine relationship with people in the field has been helpful. It wasn’t easy, by any means, but we have learned a few lessons on this journey. Ma’LIK: Yea, we have learned to just keep going and show why we deserve to be placed in a position for certain things. As far as what we want the world to know, we want them to know it’s never too late to chase a dream. Oh and the real may take longer to get off the ground but it glides longer. Keep going!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
DRANK ANTHONY: Well, with covid still kicking I can show them the front of my place and tell them Whataburger is right down the street lol. Naw let me be real ha, I would take them to grab a bite at Stiles Switch BBQ for the first meal. Some of the best BBQ I’ve had hands down. Ma’LIK: I would probably cook at the crib honestly lol I make a mean tomato basil soup. DRANK ANTHONY: Yea that sh.. fire, props! But after we get full we would head to the studio and see what The Bird House ATX got going on. Might hang with them, make a cameo in a video or hop on a track you know let them see us at work. Ma’LIK: From there we would hit the streets and see where the day takes us, but honestly it will take us back to the studio lol.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
