We had the good fortune of connecting with Chloe Diaz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chloe, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
My goal is to write progressive policy that reduces harm done onto marginalized communities, maintain my nonprofit—URMentor—dedicated to bridging the gap between first-generation undergraduate students of color and law school, and continue building my online presence on TikTok and Instagram so I can bring awareness to WOC’s experience in the legal community.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Currently, I’m a law clerk at an employment and labor law firm, Lubin & Enoch, PC, a fellow and organizer for Harvard and Howard Law’s Justice Initiative, head of a nonprofit, URMentor, and influencer on TikTok (@lawtinx) and Instagram (@lawandskincare). I’m most excited to find post-grad employment in a public interest career so I can continue to advocate for the rights of historically marginalized groups. While my legal journey has been an nonlinear, obstacle-ridden path, my family’s unwavering support, mentors’ guidance, and friends’ encouragement have provided me with the tools necessary to overcome such obstacles. If I could bestow one piece of advice onto any pre-law student, it’d be to create a strong support system to rely on so you’re less likely to burn out.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If you’re not eating a good, hearty Southern meal, did you even go to Houston? Turkey Leg Hut, Breakfast Club, Crawfish Cafe, and Dona Leti’s will leave your stomach happy and full. After you’ve energized from your meal, take a stroll around Discovery Green or Memorial Park. Both destinations are a breath of fresh air amid the huge, bustling city. Watch the stunning Texas sunset at the Twilight Epiphany Skyspace or Buffalo Bayou Park. Lastly, end your day on a sweet note at Hank’s Ice Cream (if Beyonce likes their ice cream, it logically follows that you must as well) or House of Pie.The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of my parents. My mom’s grit, dad’s optimism, and both of their compassion have pushed me to become the driven, idealistic, and caring person I am today. They’ve relentlessly supported all of my ambitions (regardless of whether they were actually good concepts) and are always there to hype me up. I owe all of my success to them.
