We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
If you had of asked me this question a few years ago, my answer would be completely different! Work / Life balance is a complete mystery until you are right in the middle of not getting enough sleep and the time dedication it takes to run a succesful business. It definitely takes a planner and a good time managment skill to juggle everything. It took me years to learn that I would never get where I wanted to go by spinning my wheels. I try to never beat myself up when I choose self care over working on my craft a few more hours. Balance is power.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In the last year, how many events have you gone to that had cake? On that same note, how many have you been to that you think would have been better with cake? Those are the events that I live for. I started specializing in intimate weddings and events about 4 years ago but I have been baking for over 12 years. Some things I am really excited about for my company, Rosie Cakes, is finally launching my website, commiting to larger events and going in to some venues with vendor proposals to be a on more preferred vendor lists. That last one is a big one. I can’t help but to smile when I think about expanding. Building a business is such a journey. I have learned to enjoy the journey and take it step by step. Rome wasn’t built in a day, so; can I also use that as my excuse for just now launching a website 4 years later? No, but in all seriousness, there is no rush. When I am doing what I love, my cakes speak for themselves. What I have done with my business so far makes me very proud.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I may be the worst person to ask about what to do in Houston. If it is a hot spot, you may not catch me there. I am a lover of small crowds and intimate settings but if the vibe is good, I will try anything once! Present Company is a big favorite of mine. Any place that has built in areas for photo-ops is a yes for me! If I were to tell someone what a really nice Sunday afternoon in Houston offered, I would definitely recommend a stroll or a bike ride down by Buffalo Bayou. If you have not done so already, check out the Cistern, take a tour. It’s simple, yet very cool. After that, heading over to The Kitchen at Dunlavy is ideal. The atmosphere is outstanding and the food is delicious. But, if waiting in line isn’t your thing, plan ahead with a few friends and set up a picnic. The pop up picnic specialists at Picnic in the City will make your little get together so perfect and instagram worthy, all your friends will be major jelly!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I told myself I wouldn’t be cliche’, yet here I am, thanking my mom; of course! My biggest supporter next to my entire family. Literally, the person who told me my worth from the beginning. She thinks everything I do is beyond amazing; for that, I am so grateful! Now that I gave my shoutout to the obvious, I also want to give a big one to my favorite cake friend who also runs her business out of Houston, Valerie of Midnight Cakes. If ever I am feeling defeated in this cake game, I shoot her a message and she never fails to encourage me with “cake” affirmations! Always a win with a friend!
