We had the good fortune of connecting with Christy Drake and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christy, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor in the success of Baked by Drake is the connections I’ve made with customers. We have been vendors at the Memorial Villages Farmers Market for three years, and we have built relationships with customers who stop by each weekend for a “market cookie.” I’ve been lucky enough to make cookies for customers as they celebrate important moments in their lives and then continue those relationships as they celebrate the or next big event.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
While running my bakery business takes a lot of time, I also continue to work full-time as a middle school English teacher. It makes for a busy schedule, but I love both of my careers. Having a day at the job means I’m often baking late at night , but I love how my students help me stay connected with pop culture, which use in cookie designs!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A trip to Houston must include: – some Mexican food at El Tiempo; their fajitas are a go-to favorite for my family -a hike along Buffalo Bayou or at the Houston Arboretum- my boys love to stop at the pond to visit the turtles. -a relaxing afternoon The Gingerman in Rice Village with a cold beer, then a stroll down the street for dessert from The Chocolate Bar -a pop into the David Adickes Studio, home to the giant president busts (and more oversized art!) -wear the kids out with an educational to the Children’s Museum -dinner at UB Preserv Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My cousin, Mary Beth Burrow, of Mary Beth Events, was one of the first people who encouraged me to sell my cookies! I was baking for a few friends and family, and she was one of the reasons I turned it into a business! I’ve also been able to work with her for some of her great events, making special cookies to match her themes.
