We had the good fortune of connecting with Tricia Eaton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tricia, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I grew up in Victoria, TX. It’s a relatively small town a couple hours down the road from Houston. Growing up, I would always complain about how small and boring Victoria was. In reality, it offered me so much more than I realized at the time.
I started dancing as many young kids do and my mom allowed me to audition for The Nutcracker. I was hooked, from then on, I spent my days focused on my ballet training. I was eventually accepted into Victoria Ballet Theatre and I had many great years in the company from junior high through high school. I had a group of friends within the company and it was amazing. From there I went on to study dance into college. Having that opportunity taught me so many things. I learned that I had an amazing support network, starting with my parents, also in my teachers and friends. I also learned self discipline and how to balance school and other activities.
So while not related to photography necessarily, I think it formed who I am. I am hard working, dedicated, creative and know that I have an incredible support system wanting me to succeed.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have come a long way from my early days, and still have a lot of goals ahead of me. I think all artists can see what they would do better next time.
I am proud of all my work, I love to capture emotion and try to get family images to go beyond a pose. Candid and intimate weddings are also fun for me.
An area that really excites me is my work with dancers and ballet companies. I studied ballet for over 15 years, and photographing dancers is a challenge but also incredibly rewarding. The idea of capturing movement and emotion while hitting all technical aspects is a lot from a nano second. My training means I have an eye for what is right and wrong.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So many things. Probably a kinder soccer game, because I have three young kids and we are in soccer season. Then the museums, all of them. I never get time to go but love a day at the museum. Another day at the zoo, my kids love the zoo and never tire of it. I would stop by Anthonie’s in Simonton for an amazing meal and gorgeous evening with some great music. Probably a TUTS show or evening at the ballet. A day shopping, I especially love the outdoor areas like City Centre where you can stroll and grab a bite to eat. Head to Galveston for some beach time.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh man, so many people. I have an amazing support system. When I started my business I really didn’t know where it would take me. If it weren’t for the encouragement of my family and friends I probably would have let self doubt stop me. I think it is incredibly easy to doubt yourself, especially in something that is creative and subjective.
Through their continued encouragement, I sought out projects that have pushed me out of my comfort zone. In doing so, I asked to study and learn from a photographer that I have admired for years to build and grow my craft. His generosity in gifting me with mentorship and years of knowledge has not only helped me improve my craft but also my confidence.
