We had the good fortune of connecting with Austyn Cage and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Austyn, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
As a child I always felt out of place. It felt like I didn’t belong anywhere. Like I didn’t have a voice. I was very closed off, timid & socially awkward. Pursuing music gave me an outlet to express myself as well as speak for others out there that also feel like they don’t have a voice. I create music from the soul and heart. It’s not all about money and fame. For me personally, it’s about making a difference and breaking the stereotype that all rap and hip hop is negative.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think going to school for Sound Engineering set me apart from other independent artists out there. Getting the professional training allowed me to perfect my craft both in the studio and on stage. It wasn’t all high notes though. I definitely had some ups and downs along the way but staying consistent and staying patient is key.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We definitely sliding to Houston! I honestly love H-Town because of the variety. There’s literally something for everybody no matter what they’re interested in. But if I had to choose, I’d say my favorite spots are the Galleria, the Seismique Art Musem, & House of Blues. I’m a big fan of expression so I feel like these places really emphasize that.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I really have to give credit to the instructors in the Sound Engineering program at Lamar State College Port Arthur. I can honestly say that without all of the knowledge they’ve blessed me with, I wouldn’t be where I am today. It’s ironic because I was so against going to Lamar because I wanted to leave Port Arthur after graduating from high school. There were other colleges that had my interest but Lamar ended up being the one for me. I can say with 100% certainty that Lamar has one of the best music production departments.
