We had the good fortune of connecting with Ana Silva and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ana, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Since I was a little girl, I’ve always had that creative bug. I always loved trying new things. I taught myself knitting and crochet because I wanted to make pretty things. Then I taught myself how to write crochet patterns because I wanted to challenge my creativity. It comes very natural to me to see something and make it into a pattern. Then it was the photography bug that started poking me, haha. Since I was about 12 years old I started taking photos. Mind you, this was heavily the film era and I had a 35mm that I took with me everywhere. I’d say I got the love for photos from my mom. She’s always loved photos so I guess it rubbed off. I got my first pro DSLR camera 15 years ago when I had my second baby. I took photos of everything and everyone. I noticed I had an eye for photography so I proceeded to learn everything I could. As a stay at home mom, I used my time to learn posing, editing and everything to make sure I could hone my skills. I didn’t have a genre at the time so I did everything from weddings to events. It wasn’t until five years ago that I started mentoring with Sue Bryce that I found my passion. I realized that my passion and purpose was photographing women and children. These two groups really make my heart sing.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I specialize in women and children photography. I make it my goal to help women of all ages, shapes and sizes see their true beauty. I help them fall in love with themselves just the way they are and see themselves the way those that love them see them.
I believe that what sets me apart is my commitment to making sure they have amazing photos of themselves. I make sure that when they leave the studio, they feel more confident and beautiful. Seeing them transform in front of my camera fills me with the greatest joy.
Getting to where I am hasn’t been easy. It’s been a very long road and I’m still not nearly close to where I want to be. I’m still learning. There have been many times where I’ve wanted to quit. But my love for photography and the purpose of photographing people have been stronger than the urge to quit. Whenever I feel down or hopeless, I remember why I’m doing this. I remind myself that what I do is important. That preserving people’s memories is my super power and quitting would be a disservice to them and me.
Running a business is not easy. You will encounter so many different people and not all of them will be the right client. I learned that no matter how hard I try, I won’t please everyone nor will I be able to make them all happy. There will be times where they’re not satisfied despite my best efforts and I have to be ok with it. I’m still learning about how to offer the best quality of service and products to my clients. It’s a journey that I’m happy to take and one that fills me with joy.
I want the world to know that when they choose Ana Silva Photography, they’re not getting just a photographer. They’re getting someone fully committed to preserving their memories and someone who will do their best to make sure they’re in love with their photos. After all, I’m not just taking their photos, I’m creating their legacy.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, NYC has TONS of things to do! More than a week is needed to experience the beauty that is NYC.
First, you must go to Central Park. Bethesda Fountain, the Boat House, the Garden, The Mall, Strawberry Mansion, Belvedere Castle. Of course, you’ll need a whole day to experience the beauty within the park.
If heights isn’t an issue, you must go up the Empire State Building, the Edge and Freedom Tower formerly WTC.
You must eat pizza! NYC has the best pizzas in the world and you can’t leave without grabbing a slice from Prince pizzeria, Julianna’s or Grimaldi’s. But you can’t really go wrong with any pizza in the city.
To hang out definitely the rooftops. Not only will you get amazing city views but a fantastic time with friends.
New York City isn’t called the city that never sleeps for no reason. There is always something to do here and you’ll have a hell of a time.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom because she started my love for photos. Sue Bryce because thanks to her I found my purpose and passion.
My husband for pushing me and believing in me when I didn’t believe in myself.
My beautiful children for being my muses and photo experiments, haha.
Maria Arellano from Maribella Portraits for being such a great friend, supporter and teaching me how to turn my photos into works of art.
