We had the good fortune of connecting with Khalid Rasheed and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Khalid, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My first thought to be honest with PulseTheMagazine was just to be a voice to the voiceless and give those people that might not have a budget but process real talent as a artist, model, dancer, etc. To give them a way to get exposure at a affordable rate and get them in the door for more magazine features, video appearance’s, release parties, etc. Since at the time of being created PulseTheMagazine was released I was a artist myself working on my second album and managing my own record label.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When the idea of a magazine came about. I was incarcerated so two year’s later I was released and I was getting rejected fr job’s because of my criminal history, my family was currently working on a album, and I started to get back into music as therapy. And it so happen after releasing my album I was passing out samples to my cd’s and it was guy in my apartment complex where my mother stayed he said he liked my music and that he does graphics. So I didn’t take him serious at the time. So one day or actually during the month of Ramadan the last 10 days to be exactly. He asked me is it something that you wanna do or thought about doing? A few minutes later I was like yeah and said while I was incarcerated I wanted to do a magazine. He looked at me and said magazine. I said yeah again. So he said alright we both pulled up to the desktop and let google do the rest. We found a site called joomag.com looked up pricing. So he said what do want to call the magazine. Fir about 10-20mins we both started brainstorming. So I said let’s call it Pulse. He said why? I said because nothing starts with a Pulse. And he said you’re right. So we looked up and found other Pulse magazine name’s and logo’s. So we kept the name Pulse and added on the the magazine with the actual Pulse signal as the signature to set us apart. Bought the magazine package copyrighted the name, launch a site till the count of the release date of September 1st 2013. So this September 1st should be the 8 Year Anniversary Party not 4 Year Anniversary Party. But I had to take a break from this business not to get burned out from constantly traveling by myself , and letting staff members go to. So I’m 2019 I was approach again to bring back Pulse after a two year hiatus and we drop in March 2020 dispite co-void we have been making dues and ends meet no PPP loan, no hand outs, or no investor’s. I do it from submission, editing, graphics designing flyers, promo, etc.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston Texas is so big to those on the outside looking in. I would take them to get some Frenchy’s off Scott Street. Threw the Third Ward, Sunnyside, Hiram Clarke, Dead End, Screw Shop, The Galleria, Johnny Dang shop, Pappadeaux, House of Blues Houston, Toyota Center, NRG Stadium , Minute Maid, gotta see the We Live Houston sign.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout-out my City Houston Texas. My neighborhood and community of the Old Third Ward 3200 Tuam Ave. My photography/videography teams@TheTexasPlug, @PopupTv, and @bohsaki_htx. My designer @86blvdgraphics. My inspiration is of course my Grandma,Mother, and baby sister. Since when I was going threw good, bad, and ugly times. They was by myside. Book for my spiritual guidance is the Qur’an and my Imam in myself and Masjid in state or out of state I try best to attend.
