We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamara Bevel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tamara, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
After many years in Corporate America, I was longing for a creative outlet and more work/life balance. In October 2019, I turned 40 and realized that time waits for no one! I had always dreamed of being an entrepreneur but was afraid to take the leap. So in January 2020, I started my cookie business and never looked back! Starting a small business is a win-win for me because I get to be my own boss but most importantly, I get the privilege of being a part of my customers’ special occasions and that is what is most important to me.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
D’Luxe Confection Co. specializes in custom-decorated sugar cookies and confections for every occasion. What sets my business apart from the others is my commitment to offering the best customer experience possible from beginning to end. I am most proud of how my cookie decorating skills have upgraded in such a short amount of time. I truly believe the success of my business is due to continuously improving my skill set. I am always attending advanced cookie decorating classes so that I can offer the latest trends in cookie decorating to my customers. It was not an easy journey and I have learned so many valuable lessons along the way. I want the world to know that  I am a cookie artist who is passionate about every order, big or small. It is my mission to provide all of my customers with an unparalleled confectionery experience!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

If my best friend came to visit the area for a week, we’d be feasting out way throughout Houston. So many great culinary experiences to be had!

Our first stop would be El Tiempo! The BEST Tex Mex food in Houston hands down. (Don’t debate me on this!)
Gatlin’s BBQ is the BEST in Houston so we’d stop there as well. (Remember, don’t debate me on this!)
We’d also grab some Thai food from Thai Cottage. Last but certainly not least, I have to take her to The Breakfast Klub. It’s a MUST!

Then we’d plan to go shopping at Memorial City Mall, have a little fun at Top Golf and people watch in the Plaza at City Centre! Houston has a lot of places to check out but I would start there since I am not into the club scene.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to send a shoutout to my family but most importantly, my mother Millicent Webber, for your love and unwavering support! I also want to shoutout my mentor, former colleague and friend Kay Lastrapes for encouraging me on this journey. “The student has become the master” and I hope I have made you proud!
