We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamari Lewis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tamari, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
The thought of relocating myself to a new environment thousands of miles away from family, friends and my comfort zone scared me. But, I could sit back with fear and think of all the things I would miss (that would more than likely change) and the fears of the unknown, or I could take the chance and see what lies ahead. In all aspects of my life, the risks that I have taken have offered great rewards. One of the biggest risk I took allowed me the most rewarding career. I took the risk to move thousands of miles away from my comfort zone to a rural community in a state I never visited to grow my professional experience. When I think about taking a risk, I think about two things it could go good or it could go bad, if it goes good, great if it goes bad, you tried and you more than likely can grow from the experience. If I don’t take the risk, I’ll always wonder.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am the owner and lead Speech-Language Pathologist at Jubilee Communication Therapy. Jubilee Communication Therapy believes in helping children overcome speech and language challenges by providing functional, play- based services in the comfort of the client’s home. At Jubilee Communication Therapy, we celebrate every milestone! Uniquely, we believe in family! We encourage and support families in participating and carrying over the skills and strategies worked on in therapy.

Jubilee Communication Therapy was created July 2020, during a global pandemic. When I thought about life after graduate school, I saw myself working for a school or another agency providing speech and language services to children. I’ve grown up around many entrepreneurs, but I did not see that for myself until I relocated to Texas.

Upon moving to Houston, Texas I wanted to gain experience in a new setting, so I accepted a position working as a PRN subcontractor providing speech and language evaluations and treatment services in homes in north Houston. Unfortunately when the pandemic hit I stopped providing PRN services. I enjoyed so many aspects of serving children in their natural home environment. I began to research how I could become a contractor instead of a subcontractor. During my search, I realized I could start a business and contract my own business to health insurance companies. Well, that was the beginning of something new. I knew it would be a huge learning curve which scared me, but with the motivation, mentorship and collaboration with colleagues, a business was created. I am proud of myself for continuously stepping out of my comfort zone to learn, network and grow the business. It has not been easy. During this time time when life was slower it offered me more time to dedicate to the business, however the time does not ease effort. It is so rewarding to be accomplishing something I never thought I would do. The lessons I have learned are to ask for help and find your community of mentors to support you along the journey. There is so much to learn and it can be very overwhelming. The opportunity and growth for Jubilee Communication Therapy is endless. Currently I am learning about school contracting services. I aspire to support schools by providing school-based services to school districts, charter schools and daycares. I want the community to know Jubilee Communication Therapy is here to provide quality and evidence -based treatment. Jubilee Communication Therapy is open and accepting new clients.
