We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Weldon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Work-life balance has always been very important to me, especially now that I am a soon-to-be mom. I have a day job, which is my primary career as a pharmacist, as well as my art career and business to run. It is not always easy to balance everything, but I have always put family first. My home life and growing family are my first priority, and because I have set this boundary it keeps me grounded and helps prevent me from becoming overwhelmed. It also helps tremendously that my business is something I am passionate about, the Earth. Because I donate my proceeds to the Nature Conservancy, I feel like I can make a difference with my art. Having clear boundaries and passions help with decision making in my day to day life.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I specialize in painting and drawing, and all of my work is inspired by nature. I paint landscapes, animals, and florals – my artwork is truly a tribute to the Earth. My work can vary from small drawings to large life size murals. I sell merchandise on society6, as well as original pieces during art shows and also take commissions through email. I love the outdoors, I travel around the country and world to hike and gain inspiration for my works. Because of this, I am a big advocate for saving the environment and conserving our planet. I am thankful to be able to donate all of the proceeds I make with my art to the Nature Conservancy, to truly make a difference. Donating my proceeds helps keep me motivated to move forward with my business, and I recommend to anyone looking for inspiration to find something they are passionate about, and use that to their advantage.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many great places in Houston! I would take them on a photo tour to the many beautiful art murals you can find all over the city, such as the Houston Graffiti Building. I would also take them to the many art museums in the city, such as Museum of Fine Arts, the Menil Collection, and the Contemporary Arts Museum. I would bring them thrift shopping along Westheimer and the Heights for funky antiques and second hand clothing. For restaurants I would be sure they got to eat at The Original Nifas on Navigation, Niko Niko’s on Montrose, Cafe Brasil for a great cup of coffee, and Oishii for a great sushi meal. I would say my favorite areas in Houston are Montrose and the Heights, so lots of time would be spent there!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are many people in my life that I can thank for supporting me and encouraging me throughout my career including family and friends. For this shout out I would like to mention that I have found so much inspiration and encouragement from other local artists on social media, and the art community. Seeing other artists find success and put themselves out there gave the me confidence to try and do it myself.
