We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Sharifa Glass and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Glass, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Both of my children were breastfed thanks to the support of my family and the children’s pediatrician. As a result of my breastfeeding journey, I was inspired to start this clinical practice to support all mothers in reaching their breastfeeding goals. I also desired to open a pediatric office that would provide evidence-based medical care for children in the comfort, privacy, and safety of their own homes. This also gives me the opportunity to answer parents’ questions during longer and more relaxed appointments.

What should our readers know about your business?
After 10 years of working in general pediatrics, pediatric emergency medicine, and pediatric urgent care, I opened Houston’s only house-call pediatric and breastfeeding medicine practice called The Vine Pediatrics and Lactation. Our patients receive all the normal amenities of a pediatric office within their home, and parents have direct phone access to the pediatrician (me) 24 hours daily. Our physician and lactation consultants come to you.

The mission at The Vine Pediatrics and Lactation is to promote the health and well-being of children by providing accessible, high-quality, personable preventive care and treatment. We also help women to achieve their breastfeeding, pumping, or chestfeeding goals through evidence-based medicine. Our practice is unique because patients receive superior in-home care and treatment from a pediatrician and breastfeeding medicine physician. We also offer telemedicine visits when appropriate.

Starting a medical practice has been a challenging and rewarding experience. I have learned to readily ask and search for answers to questions in my physician entrepreneurial groups. I have learned to reach out and partner with other small-businesses and in doing so, my patients appreciate the personalized service they receive from these businesses.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the US. There are so many options for people to experience the essence of Houston. My personal favorites that highlight the artistic and fun culture are Discovery Green, Miller Outdoor Theater, The Ensemble Theater, Houston Improv, and Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Every day has to include good food and drinks at either UnWine, Gatlin’s BBQ, Baby Barnaby’s, Aladdin Mediterranean Cuisine, Pena’s Donut Heaven & Grill, Cool Runnings, The Chocolate Bar, Masraff’s, or Oceanaire.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family and close friends have been supportive throughout every milestone of my educational and entrepreneurial success. They have been my coaches, cheerleaders, and trainers, and I am extremely grateful for the positive examples they have set for me by their own personal successes.
