We had the good fortune of connecting with Sychoya Castex and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sychoya, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was raised by a traditional black family, went to a traditional black church, attended traditional black schools, and had traditional black friends. So if you are anything like me, you understand all too well the crippling stigma that could sometimes be associated with black female fellowships. Growing up I remember hearing things like, “I don’t have any female friends because they are too messy” or “Be careful with those female friends, they will either take your man or talk behind your back”. These statements were often said not only by black woman, but about black woman. Even on television, we are portrayed as voluptuous figures with weaves and aggressive attitudes. I believe those perceptions have further nurtured that crippling stigma, making it intimidating for black women to strive for wholesome and vibrant relationships with each other, even if they truly desired it. This fueled me to formulate my mission, with the intent to shatter that glass ceiling! Conscious Sisterhood Social Club is Houston’s new vehicle of influence, creating harmonious social experiences for African American women to build productive relationships. Through our weekly wellness workshops, exclusive Members Only monthly outings, and annual Sisters Retreat’s, we collectively empower one another to meet life’s challenges with self-assurance and succeed!
What should our readers know about your business?
Like many others I was determined to discover my true purpose. In the corporate world I tried a little bit of everything. I worked for law firms, call centers, food chains, and hotels. After earning my PHR certification I was thrilled but still felt unfulfilled. Through out the phases of marriage and motherhood, I mustard up the courage to launch a nonprofit mentoring program in 2017. It was called, “She Is Goals”. The idea was to create a structural environment that would support young women through the phases of adulthood; middle school to high school, high school to college, and college to independence. The vision was great, but I struggled to execute it. I went back and forth to the drawing board, passionately trying to perfect the ideal environment for women actively pursuing to be their best, in spite of what they have been through. Therefore, I did a spiritual fast which included no food nor water, for three days. During that time, God gave me a new vehicle of influence for my impact in our Houston communities; “Conscious Sisterhood Social Club”. This approach has given me the flexibility to invoke the change my community deserves, and can appreciate.
